(Home) Idling /idle up ( 92 hiace )

Would anyone be able to tell me where the idle up mechanism is on a 3L deisel engine (2779cc)

It starts at 800rpm cold and rises to 1000rpm hot
It will not adjust down on the cable and the screw stop underneath (on pump?) clearly hasnt been touched for some years
I am reluctant to adjust this in case I end up masking a possible problem
Wondered if the 'idle up' could be stuck on - as when ancilleries swithched on the idle speed doesnt seem to alter
Are there any posible faults that could account for this - any suggestions welcome
It did have an overheat prob recently but couldnt say if the idle speed was the same prior to this or not as I am only 3 weeks into ownership
Thanks
Chris

I have recently bought a T/A,it is a 2ltr td,Turismo. When at idfle it is like sitting on a tumble dryer, the vibration is terrible, the idle uo switch does not seem to function, both at start up & after running a while I have a rev count of50+1click above I asume it to be 510revs.Sum mechanicle knowledge zero so if advice could be in Idiot language I would bs most gratefull.

Hmm, sounds like there's something wrong with the injection pump. Has the engine much power? Does it smoke? What maximum revs will it achieve?

If the vehicle is running and driving well, it's possible that the idle screw has come loose on the pump. You'll see it at the top of the pump, the throttle cam resting against it. You should be able to work out which way to turn it if you get someone to press the accelerator...

I have the same issue however it only seems to do it when its warm.

I had the timing belt done about 2 months ago and thought this could be the cause (giving it time to wear in and all that).

Mine starts at 800 cold and then rises to about 1400 when warm or on long journeys. In gear it drops down to 800 but in neutral it shoots straight back up to 1400.

Our local townie mechanic recons it could be the vacuum pump playing up but as it happens when it chooses its hard to rectify. Hopefully the summer should iron out this issue.

Russell, when the engine is cold,, an actuator linked to the throttle cam increases idle speed. As the engine warms, this device releases. You should see a gap between the cam and the tickover screw when cold, this gap should reduce and disappear as warm- up occurs.Check that the idle up linkage is free, and that this clearance reduces. If not, suspect a blockage in the coolant feed to the actuator (bottom of the pump, two hoses and a big spring on...

Check also that there's free play in the throttle cable when the engine is hot...
