(Home) Priming the fuel - help

I have what I believe is a fuel feed problem.

I will check out tonight for any obvious fuel leaks or air leaks, but this morning I tried to pump the fuel at the filter.
I have been told by a friend that the pump on top of the filter should unscrew and pop up, then you pump it until you can feel some resistance. It should then be OK.
My problem is that the pump doesn't seem to willing to be unscrewed, but it does pump up and down about an inch.
Should it unscrew, or is it already unscrewed?
And how much resistance is enough? It doesn't go hard, but the resistance I can feel seems to be mostly the spring.

It is a 1990 MasterAce Surf 4X4, 2CT engine.

It wouldn't start today, seems to be the problem previously mentioned that dissapeared all by itself has returned.
Checking the rest of the fuel system first, before I call for help on the injectors.

Doesn't unscrew, your friend is thinking of a Lucas filter IIRC. It'll never firm up as there's leakoff within the injector pump, but if you disconnect a hose, you'll find it's pumping OK

Thanks for that.

Like many others, this is my first diesel, so much is new to me.

I guess that means there is a leak somewhere in the system.

The next thing to do is change the fuel filter, then we will see what happens.

Dave.

P.S. my friend has owned several 4WD deisels, both Toyota and Nissan, as well as experience with trucks (sorry, Lorries to you) and that was his experience, although he did say this one could be different.

I forgot to mention that I have copied just about everything I could find about fuel filter and pump from the Ace Answers link here.

This is a great resource.
Thanks to all who contribute.

We have just as much trouble over here in Western Australia (probably more) getting info and parts for these things - we can not get the engine manual at all, because Toyota don't stock it and wont get it.
I will probably have to break down and get one from the links you have here.

There seems to be plenty of Aces here in Perth, but there doesn't seem to be the same kind of spirit among them that you guys seem to have - no clubs that I can find, and other owners just look at you strange if you wave at them.

There are a few posts from other places in the world, but you guys seem to have a community that is unrivalled.

Thank-you all very much, especially those who are the 'authorities' on these vehicles.

well, while i was at work, my father came over to have a look.

i was going to change the fuel filter when i got home, as that is the one i hadn't got to yet. we changed the other filters the moment we bought the thing (three months ago), but i just drained the fuel filter, and everything was clean from that, so i thought it could probably wait a little.

because my father is retired and has a little more time than i do, he thought he would have a look, and as i told him that was next on my list, he did it.

that fixed everything, purrs like a kitten now.

my father also told me that the fuel filter he took off has japanese writing on it! it hasn't been changed since it came to the country - 1998!!!!!!!!!!!

i guess that proves that you shouldn't take anything for granted - will probably also reduce the smoking, although that was not drastic.

moral of the story - don't put off till tomorrow what you can do........

got to go will finish this later..............

dave.
