(Home) Tyres 4WD

Greetings,
I posted this message earlier, but it looks like for some reason it did not make it onto the list. I wrecked my townie 3 months ago and I am just now getting back on the road. When I bought the townie I was told that I could not put a tire on the van that was not the exacxt same kind as the other tires or I would ruin the 4wd. When I first bought the townie, I put new tires all the way around. I was not knowledgable about tires and bought tires that are hard as a rock. Since one tire was totally destroyed in the wreck, I was thinking of buying two new softer tires and putting on the front. Of course they would be a different kind than the ones I now have. Does anyone know if this will really pose a threat to the 4wd?
Thanks,
Mervin

I have a different make of tyre on every corner of my Townie and no problems using the 4wd.

The brand is not important, but the size is criticle.

They must be the same size in diameter, width, and aspect. i.e. 205/75x14 - all these numbers must be the same.

Insurance also cares about the speed and load rating.

Any half decent tyre shop will take care of these things anyway.

I guess you could have different sizes front to rear, as long as you don't use 4WD or lock the front hubs - kind of defeats the purpose.
