(Home) Rear heater and aircon

Ok here i am again. Love the site keep up the great work everyone its so helpful in all aspects. Anyway i just got a 92 townace royal lounge jap import. Absolutely love the wagon. Fixing all the minor nigly problems now lol. Back heater or aircon doesnt go. The fans work fine and the exchanger from upper to lower vents work fine. No heat or cooling as required. I noticed that the lever for cold or hot seems very easy to slide. I thought maybe it being a cable that it shouldnt slide so easily. Checked this by removing the control panel and all looks fine, the cables are on etc. Any ideas ????? If the aircon is turned on the vents go fine and you can hear the engine rpm's increase. Air con and heating in the front work perfectly. Any advice be much appreciated.

Remove the plastic grill infront of the right hand middle passenger's feet. It should be fluff free, maybe clogging the system?
Once engine hot feel the pipe to the rear unit from underneath, just behind the front wheel infront of the battery box projection. Both pipe should be hot, it is constantly on/hot. Next check back the venting route to check it is all connected.
Let us know how you get on.

Clive thankyou for that info. I checked the vent as described and is clean no fluff at all in the unit. Today i checked those pipes i take it one is a inlet to heater core whilst the other is the outlet. Anyway one gets very hot the other is luke warm. The one that is lukewarm is the one that travels right to the other side of the van on the crossmember underneath, so i presuming this is a return back to the radiator. Obviously no water flowing through the unit at the rear heater part. Would this also be the cause for the air con to not get cold ????? I noticed that there is a refill valve under the flap behind the drivers seat for the aircon. Are the front and rear aircon connected together ???? eg use the same gas for cooling, because the front goes fine. Anyway re the heater, the cables are connected so that puts that theory out that they are the cause, well i take it they are connected as its very hard to see where the destination of these cables are, i know sliding the locator changes the ducting to the top or bottom and air is coming out fine from these points. Could it be the core blocked ????? if so if i removed the piping at the location u told me about would i be able to flush the core from that point ??? If not please advise what i need to do. Many thanks for the help you people give on here too by the way.

The front and rear A/C are connected and Cool box if you have one, may require servicing, but I would have thought you would get something. The rear heater matix should be on constantly. So it sounds as if you have a blockage or air lock, as you suggest you could try just flushing the matrix, the luke warm return may just be radiant heat, does it keep warm accross the other side?
Do not know why you do not get cold or hot, the air gets heated all the time, then cooled if A/C selected.
Happy bemused head scratching, unless some one else can advise?

Clive thanks for your info again. Today i flushed the back core at the points where you told me the hoses were. wasnt really blocked or dirty however the heater is now going yay :) I think it must have been a good air lock. Re the aircon. As i said front is great rear is nothing. I am going to get the rear unit gassed a little as i suspect lack of gas in the rear system. I dont have a cooler box. If the system runs on the same gas why is there 2 gassing points in the van ?????? I have noticed there is a high point at the front underneath van and another point behind the drivers seat with a high point on it as well. Thats why i am suspecting there may be two seperate units. Anyway thanks for your time and when i get the rear gassed and if it works i will get back to you.

As Clive says, hot water passes the rear matrix at all times, although IIRC only the air to the foot vents can be heated. Cooled first- the core you can see at the inlet is the evaporator...
Unfortunately, the cd doesn't show the airflaps, only showing the housing as a complete assembly, But I see that both cables go down the r/h side of the heater box.

Now if you've hot water going in and cool coming out it does sound like a restriction is present. Disconnecting at the matrix and backflushing is worth a try, but check also for blocked or collapsed hoses.
