(Home) Front windscreen

Hi I am in New Zealand and have a 92 Townace royal lounge. Its a japanese import. I also have a uniden GPRS radar detector. I cant get my radar detector to go when its on the screen, it just wont hook onto the satellite, yet if i pull the unit back about 2 foot from the screen its fine. I have contacted Uniden and they have said that some winscreens have a metallic layer laminated into the screen or that some vehicles have a airconditioner sensor near the windscreen that can cause a blockout. Does anyone have any idea on this situation ???? or does anyone know if there is anyway i can check to see if the screen has this metallic layer embedded into it. Any help would be much appreciated as its really driving me nuts.

Bruce,
You should have climate control with your model. You will find a small dark red or brown plastic thing front leafthand side of the dash, at the end of the vents, this is the A/C sensor.

Clive is right, you won't have an athermic windscreen, but as you have a Royal Lounge it will have Climate Control & as such has a sunlight sensor on the dash, try putting your radar detector up higher on the screen, say below the mirror this should work, this is where mine is. Good Luck. HTH Rob.

Thanks for the quick replies. I would like to add yes i do have one of those sensors as you describe but not climate control. I cant understand why this is but definately no climate air control. What is a athermatic windscreen sorry to be dumb on this matter. Anyway i did disconnect that sensor to see if it was that stopping the radar from going but didnt make any difference.

A lot of modern cars have 'athermic' windscreens, this has a thin metallic layer in between the laminates of the screen, this helps reflect sunlight, especially radiated heat, infra red, this helps to keep the interior cooler & makes the Climate Control more efficient, the brand new Peugeot 406 I have just got has just such a screen. In direct sunlight you can see a slight purpleish haze to the screen. Hope this explains, regards Rob.
