(Home) Speakers

hi all just fitted a new sterio to my 2.2 auto 96 townace
turn up the sound to test it and the speakers have tripped out does any one know if the speaker system is fuse if so where
or if there are any trips in the speaker system

thank you all

Didn't you check the impedance of the speakers before fitting the new audio unit? If the speaker impedance is lower than the audio output it is likely to blow the speaker cones. I doubt there will be a fuse for the speakers.

no the speakers are fine it as if there a thermal cut out i have no ideas what to do next

speakers have no protection. Any chance one is shorting? Head units generally shut down if they detect any shorts (even speaker negative to ground these days...)

You have got the speakers shorting out on the metal around the edge of the hole in the door, I had the same when I fitted my Infinity speakers, had to gently bend the metal in towards the door slightly, then run several layers of insualting tape around the edge of the hole where the speaker wires connect, this cured problem, my Pioneer head unit showed the legend 'PROTECT' showing that the speaker leads were shorted out & causing the protection circuit on the head unit to operate. HTH Rob.

can anyone tell me if there is a switch that turns off the two door and the two rear speakers as i have lost all four and am left with one speaker just under my steering wheel. I've checked the radio/cassette assy and can find no fault.
any suggestions?

Make sure your conrols have not been altered ie:front rear balance, mute controls, phone mute, att etc

Check plugs carefully to rear of unit and connections on speakers.
Do continuity test of speaker wires from plug - to the speakers (if have no multimeter cheap ones are available nowadays) - this would highlight any break in the wiring ie:where they go through the door etc.

You could also connect another sound source to each speaker in turn to verify they are working - or connect a sound source to the speaker wires in the disconnected plug
If all above checks OK - you'll need the unit repaired or replaced
Hope this helps

Chris
Thanks for the response. I've checked the wiring and plugs and can still only get sound in from the small speaker under the steering wheel. It's almost as if the speakers have been switched off, but i will keep looking.

Brian

Another way to test is to establish which wires are the speaker ones at the stereo end of the loom (I imagine you've done this) and use a 1.5V battery and a couple of breakout wires to put a momentary connection between battery and speakers. Each should give a click as you make the circuit. I had to do this to work out which was which when installing a new CD player. Lost my colour code chart unfortunately! I believe the earth side of each speaker is wired individually, not earthed through the body.

If you don't get clicks and you're sure of the wires then either the speakers are dead or as you say there must be a relay switching them out for some reason, can't imagine what though.

Just a thought, some Townies have a TV tuner fitted. May have a spanner in your the works?
If fitted it is next the the washer bottle behind the trim.

I've had another thought too. What's this extra speaker under the steering wheel for? I haven't got one. Sounds like it's been installed for handsfree mobile use, in which case there may be a muting relay for the speakers so you can hear the caller.

Steve, they do have the speaker under the steering column, this is a relic from when they must have mono radios in. Mine was hooked up to the front driver's side speaker in the door. When I fitted a decent HiFi I disconnected it & then when fitting the phone hads free kit I rigged it up to that so as not to have the boxed speaker in a footwell, kept it all nice & neat. But I can't see why that one is working the dash in Brian's van is working & no others, maybe a speaker shorted out somewhere & causing amp overload.

I think it's time for an audio strip down. I'm toying with the idea of installing a cd system and an amplifier system so that i can talk to the rear passengers without shouting, 'cos everyone in the back thinks i'm deaf. You could have a point about the tv clive as there has been some kind of appliance fitted between the rear air grills.i'll keep you posted.
thanks for the help fella's
