hi
I have a 20L masterace surf petrol d-reg auto.
the problem is that the engine keeps stalling and i have to start with the key.
all the dash lights come on and i start swearing it happens when i take my foot of the accelerator.
the idle speed is 500 this is the 3rd time that it has happened the last two times i was coverd now my warrenty has run out

both times that i took it to the garage they put the ppassenger seat up, fiddled about with something then it was ok it last about 4 months before it goes again, the garage that i take it to now charges £20 before they look at the car, if it is something that i can do myself then i will give it a try each time ive took it back it took longer to get the seat up than it did to fix the fault anyone got any ideas to what the problem is and is it easy to fix.

Carb or injection? Going on the year, probably the former. It appears to me that they've been messing with the carb settings. Probably turned up the mixture screw without checking it out properly.

500rpm is too low for idle. No wonder you keep stalling. Should be more like 750 - 800. Try taking it somewhere else for a proper tune up.

Tony,

If the last resolution was (as suspected by Ian) to mess up with carb settings, i.e., simple fiddle with the screws and bring the idle speed up to 750rpm, nothing will tell you what made it drop so low in the previous instances. In addition to a proper tuning, I would suggest the obvious look (replacement) of spark plugs, petrol filter and distributor/rotor. Also, a poor battery (or simply bad contacts) will tend to drop the idle speed in an injection car, if yours is one.

BTW
Hope nobody laughs, what is this d-reg, f-reg, g-reg, it keeps coming out in posts? Anything to do with year of manufacturing?

Almost. It's to do with the registration of vehicles in mainland UK. The numbers and letters are pre-fixed with a letter to denote the year. D=86, E=87 etc. Recently it's been modified and gets changed twice a year. It's all about selling more cars. If a car is obviously 3 or more years old as denoted by the registration then you are advertising the fact you have an old car and if you want to elevate your status then you upgrade. Nice con. The way around it is to buy a NI or pre letter prefix/suffix plate at an over-inflated price. Well it keeps some people in a job!
