(Home) Aircon problems

hi

Can anyone tell me where i can get my 1990 Townace aircon check/refilled in the Cotswold or Manchester area. I have asked a couple of places but they said they couldn't handle the r12 gas.

I understand R12 is now outlawed. So perhaps they are saying they can not do a top up. They should be able to do a complete deep refill with the approved type.
I was quoted £85 with replacing various seals and about 3 hours to complete, as it was (and still is) working ok, 1 was advised to come back when it starts to fail, that was Feb 2002!

Have a look on AceAnswers the subject is covered in some detail.

I used a mobile engineer to check and disinfect the aircon system on the Masterace. Can't rember his name but he trades under the name "Chill Out". Phone him on 01772 603000 or 07798 913054. HTH ... Ray

Andy,
Clive is correct, R12 gas is now illegal to refill a/c systems with now, so the only gas you can put i is R134a, but it's not just a straight swap. First thing is you need to get an engineer to remove the R12 in the system & can it for destruction, then you need a new receiver drier fitted, this is mounted on the chassis rail just to the right of the front left wheel. Next it will need as many seals changed in the system that you can, and adaptors fitted on the charge ports, as R12 had the ssame sized schrader valves fitted, R134a has bayonet connectors, large on High side small on Low side. You will find it almost impossible to remove the compressor to drain the old mineral oil out, as it is mounted under the injection pump. After this it should be pressure tested for leaks using OFN (Oxygen Free Nitrogen), then vacuumed down to remove the air & moisture in the system, at this point it will need a complete refill of PAO68 oil & then regassed with 80% of the weight that should be in the system (Based on the weight of R12 originally used, see ace answers for these weights) after this a dye should be added so that leaks can be detected later.

... or you can try another couple of aircon places until you find one that'll top you up with R12 for a few quid...

I can also recommend James at 'Chill Out' 01772 603000 or 07798 913054
Excellent service and a very genuine guy
Did my hiace, £75 drain, pressure test and fill + 10 to fix leak from pump outlet
Took 1.5 hrs - would have been an hr if my pump was'nt leaking
Used 114 gms of 416A gas + oil and dye
His base is Bretherton Nr. Preston but as Ray states is mobile

I don't know all the ins and outs, but I have recently made enquiries here in Perth, W.A.

I haven't checked but I think mine is still on R12. It is illegal in Australia, so I made sure I mentioned that I think I am still on it.

The bloke I spoke to suggested that they could do the R134 for about $260 (Aus), but he suggested that they can do another gas, which is compatible with the old system, and works fine. I didn't write down the name of it (sorry) but he would regass with it and check the system, and do a basic service for $145 (+ parts if needed).

Maybe you could investigate over there for this other gas - the bloke said it is as good 134, with no conversion required.

Big name shop here in Perth with a reputation to guard, so I don't think this is a shonky.

Dave.

Would be very unwise to even try to find someone who will do it with R12, been banned in the UK even for topping up, since Jan 1st 2002, the penalties are £20,000 (yes 20 grand) or Six Month Imprisonment, both if you get a really bad judge. Very few people are actually breaking the law now, as there have been prosecutions. However, it probably wouldn't do much use to get a 'top up' of R12 anyway, where's the dipstick on an a/c system, so you don't know what's in there. You will need the gas removed, a new receiver drier (as they only have a 2-4 year life) and once this is all done, you're half way to a retro fit to R134a anyway. Find a good a/c man, he'll get you sorted, probably for a couple of hundred, assuming no leaks in the system. Regards Rob.

I have a 1990 liteace gxl and i will retrofit to R134, the entire system was already flushed and the receiver drier was already replaced.I just wanna ask if how much oil will i put to the a/c system? How much is total or exact dosage of oil in the a/c system with hot/coolbox?

I've been reading all your messages re- R12 problems
15 years ago the uk signed up to the montreal protocol on the abolishment of cfc's and R11 and 12 were considered to be the rogue gases causing holes in the ozone layer and subsequently they and several other cfc's were to be phased out. this has nessitated the production of "drop in replacement" gases which are available widely through out the uk. sadly many refrigeration companies are recommending retrofit replacement gases as this brings in a lot of extra revenue, so don't be fooled by rip off companies. companies recommending R134a replacement dont tell you that polyuralkaline glycol oils needed in the compressor mixed with the R134a HAS A FLASH POINT !!!
i will give details of the drop in replacement when i have the code number

r406a is available from HRP refrigeration suppliers and is a direct drop in replacement for R12. Try directory enquiries for HRP Bury St Edmunds, suffolk and ask for john steed for your nearest supplier.
