(Home) Turbo diesel power loss

I have a Montego with a Perkins turbo diesel. Since the head gasket was renewed the engine has produced white smoke when under load, but the performance was good. The injectors have been tested and are OK and the timing is ok. More recently the engine suffered severe power loss. It is difficult to start and crawls up hills. After acceleration the engine almost dies and usually stalls. It will start after a rest. The fuel pump appears ok and the fuel system has been bled. The turbo also appears to be running and compression is ok.
Any ideas what it might be.
Thanks
John

What do you mean the fuel pump "appears" ok. These things are best set up off the car on a special test device. Poor pump to engine timing could account for your power loss, poor starting and the white smoke.
