(Home) Aircon hassle

Thanks for the previous advice re my hot/cool box viz get the air con sorted first. Having studied all the threads I got a specialist in Southampton to re-gas with R134 and test my 1992 Townace super extra (new shape) 2.0 td. Bad and scary news; the low side pressure is excessively low (negative in fact) and they suspect a blockage somewhere in the system which requires (apparently) a strip down flush out and new bits. Best case scenario depending upon cost of bits is circa £600 for new valves and dessicator which has probably broken up causing the blockage. Worse case scenario is the compressor is breaking up (already noisy - but then it would be I suppose) which could cost £1,000 if they can get one. By the way they reclaimed some gas which seems to indicate that there are no leaks anywhere.

It seems I have 2 choices; Fisrt to drive the van (which is brilliant by the way) with no air con or hot/cool box and save dosh. Second expose my wallet to horrible investigative search and fix type scenario with no guarentee of final resolution.

Please advise;

ps Is there a decent handbook on auto air con so I can at least learn the basics; who knows I might be able to sort the blockage myself and save money - or this wishful thinking of a desperate Townacer.
