what do you mean, changing in and out of gears??? The tranny will lock up the torque converter at around 35mph...

Hi back on the net with yet another b.... problem .We had the townie back after a big engine overall but now when i start off when cold i either don`t go anywhere or i go but then when the townie tries to change gear it revs up to 4 then pulls my bloody head off.took it in to my local machnic he said it will need a specialist to check the gear box as what he thought was the problem is now not the problem .the gearbox specialist said he feels it is something small with in the gear box and should cost around 200 ,if it needs the bigger job it will not cost any more than 500
what problem can this be

Jane- if your engines been out it may just need the kickdown cable setting - people seem to prefer these vehicles with the slack removed from the cable at idle -
Instead of revving up to 4000rpm (you dont have an ECT button do you? If yes, switch off) try taking your foot off the pedal when you want the change to happen and it will move a gear - this technique adds a degree of control over the box

Keith - I was convinced there were probs with my hiace box some time back (feels like my 4sp auto is a 6sp)
I got 2 specialists opinions who said nothing wrong
Still not happy with it but flushing 10ltrs of atm fluid through and taking the slack from kickdown cable has helped a little.
Wondered if the match of deisel engine to autobox has different characteristics from petrol
The main issue or worry would be if the autobox charateristics change at all over time
As David points out the torque converter will lock up at a predetermined speed (my hiace locks at 40 in fourth and around 30 in third)
If the box can't make up its mind then you can take action ie:increase/decrease you speed or turn off the overdrive
I do sympathise as I've had a few autoboxes (on petrol engines) and the current one is by far the least enjoyable but have found that altering my driving style to accomodate the boxes characteristics has helped - I think less about it now as driving the box has become more natural

As someone said to me in an earlier posting - it may not solve your problem but it may offer insight into it - try this link

Hope this helps
