...and which head is on the 4Y block?...
difference is capacity, 4y is bigger, I think 2.0 vs 1.8 although Clive or one of the other spacie experts can confirm...

sorry 4y is stamped on the alloy head. Have found 2 engines 1 of each .It also has a new rad fitted would they be diffarant for each engine.

3y and 4y both 2.0
3y carb head
4y should be injection.
4y block same as 3y (for Spacecruisers) but with different casting for extra parts needed for injection system.
Did both engines come from Spacecruisers?
Best whip the old one out and compare with the new ones. Which will mate with the box etc..
Radiator will be no problem, may need some hoses replaced if the new outlets don't line up.

Clive,

Not sure how it works on space cruisers, but I have seen carb headed 3y and 4y (fitted on hilux), as well as injection 3y-E (my townie is fitted with one) and 4y-E. The capacity of the 3y is 1990cc, which they rounded to 2.0L, and if I am not wrong, the capacity of the 4Y is 2200cc, labelled 2.2L.

Mmm sounds familiar, on our model f 1988 gl The label under front passenger say's 3y but on to of the engine rockerbox it says 2y, is it possible someone just changed the rockerbox cover from a 2y block ?, its a 2.0 litre petrol.

Manecas,
4Y may be 2.2, it was never fitted as standard to UK spacecruiser but is a move available (cheaper?) block to obtain. I have only ever seen injection versions.
The 3Y-e was fitted to the very last of the Spacecruisers, assume 3Y was no longer in production to fit the last few?
Tom put it in the workshop so he should get sorted out.
