(Home) Kickdown cable seized

Hi
We've a MasterAce 2C-T auto, just recently we've had to start "over-revving" the engine to cause a gear change. On inspection I found the kickdown cable to be slack at the throttle end, but the cable outer will not slide up and down the cable which leads me to suspect the cable is seized within it's sleeve. I have no idea how the kickdown cable attaches inside the transmission, and I don't wish to pry it off to see in case this isn't the problem and I cause damage to the cable ends. Has anyone experienced a similar fault, am I right in my guess and what did they do to resolve it?

sounds like the cable OK, although replacing it isn't easy. The outer just presses into the tranny casing, but the inner wraps around a cam on the valve body. You'll have to take the sump off the tranny and maybe drop the valve body too. Probably best left to a transmission specialist (not a dealer...) as otherwise you could end up with a driveway full of springs and ball bearings...

Thanks David, glad to know I wasn't totally off track. Next question, does anyone know if I can get a standard pattern part to substitute for the original Toyota part, 'cos I've just been quoted £63+VAT for a genuine Toyota part from my local dealer, which I though was a bit steep bearing in mind it's not much more than a bike gear cable.

ask in your auto transmission specialist, they might have access to pattern parts...
