(Home) Starter bloody motor

Having patted myself on the back for putting a recond starter motor in thinking that that would solve all my problems, alas it has not. My heart sank when I heard that clicking noise and no turn-over again last night and this morning it took a good 15 minutes to get it to go.
Please does anyone have any other suggestions as to what it might be, connectors??? if so, where do I find them.
Thanks a lot
Cris

Have the battery Checked Could be a sell gone down? Battery terminals tight?

I had this and if you look on Ace Answers it's a common problem of unexplained voltage drop. I resolved it by putting in a starter button that by passes all the relays, same as the most used option of disconnecting the solenoid feed and shorting that on the battery feed to the starter, but saves the getting dirty bit.
I had had the starter to bits, cleaned and replaced worn bits, checked the battery etc. before taking the direct starter option.

Chris. This does seem to be a common fault and in my case it was the starter solenoid contacts which were the problem, coupled with less than pristine battery terminals. With a recon starter, the solenoid contacts should be perfect. However, there is always a lot of electrostatic corrosion on the contact faces and the reconditioners should have taken them out and cleaned or replaced them. It would be wise to inspect them. Also, as the current draw, on starting, is considerable, battery terminal corrosion will reduce the efficiency. By by-passing the standard solenoid energising system, you will overcome that mysterious current reduction which seems to effect some systems but, in my case, the solenoid contact clean, plus the battery terminal check, did the trick. As Clive says, the battery condition is important to start the engine, especially if it is a diesel. If the vehicle is only used for short journeys, I think you would find a big difference if the battery was to have an occasional overnight charge.

Had the same problem......couldn't get it sorted so I ran a direct cable from the starter to a a contact switch that I mounted close to the drivers seat. Starts every time!!!!

Can someone tell me how to remove the starter motor on a 2.0L D Town ace.please. I have already disconected the battery but when I look at the starter all I can see is some studs sticking out without any bolts on. Am I looking in the right place? How dificult is it to remove & refit? Thanks

Bob. What you are seeing are the ends of the two bolts which hold the starter onto the flywheel housing. Look at the back of these "studs" and you will see that they are bolts which screw into tapped holes in the starter flange. Take these two bolts out (You should be underneath the vehicle and looking towards the front in order to get your socket spanner on) the starter will then come out quite easily
