(Home) Voltage regulator

I have a 1989 mastersurf diesel. I have got a charging problem with it the alternator has been reconditioned at immense expense on refitting it worked fine but after about five minutes all the warning lights came back on and it is charging 16 volts. Do you know where the external regulator is fitted cos i can't find it! any info greatly accepted.

Daryl. The CD illustration shows that your model, ie, 1988-1992, has the regulator bolted onto the alternator itself. It's part No is 27700A. I am not completely sure of my facts here but, perhaps others might be able to explain. Do some models have a regulator mounted within the alternator ? If you have the engine manual you will see reference to a w/IC regulator (which seems to be the bolted on type) and an IC regulator which appears to be an internal component of the alternator.

thank you for your reply. The reg is not fitted to the alternator i have checked the part number of the unit with a large auto electrical company and the book lists this alternator as an internal reg type but on opening the unit there is no reg in it it is also not fitted to the back of it. I have almost completely stripped the wiring harness to trace it back but to no avail.(intelligent words for a welshman) I have had a part number and price from our local toyota dealer but they cannot tell me where it is fitted.

Daryl. Have you got the engine manual? If not, I can scan the alternator illustration and send it on. It might be a help as it shows the location of both (alternative ?) regulators. However, I have a feeling that this question has been aired before. Have you looked in Ace Answers?

Daryl,
I have a 1988 masterace and I found my Regulator after much searching behind the Glove Compartment.
If I recall, I had to squeeze both sides of the glove compartment in while it was open, this allowed it to drop down and if I remember rightly the regulator was bolted to the right as you are looking in.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

After assistance from David, I have tracked down my voltage regulator but does anybody know how to test it. I am also interested in anybody who knows of one a vehicle being broken up or if any of you owners out there have bought one but not needed it. Unfortunately these were only fitted to imported vehicles.

I'm in Kent

Please dont take this as gospel cause I'm not 100% sure - but I understand its purpose is to provide a steady reduced voltage - so you may start by checking what voltage comes out of it with ignition on and then with engine running etc.- my only experience of such things was an old polo we used to have - temp gauge was almost always in the red but actual operating temp was fine - think in that instance it was supposed to regulate the voltage to instrument at around 5 and a bit volts but did'nt thereby causing erroneous readings
However maybe some vehicles have more than one for different areas
Sorry not much help - perhaps someone else can offer townace specific info

nah, that's the instrument panel regulator you're thinking of, Chris.
Mark needs the main, alternator one...

Oh..... What about trying the local alternator reconditioners? - are the brushes ok?
