Laurence. I am not sure that there is a warning lamp next to the temperature gauge but, your layout might be different to mine. However, have a look at Ace Answers, click on "Dashboard & Electrics" and you will see a display of warning and start up lamps etc.

I suspect this is an older townace, around 1987, with a very different temperature gauge, the pointer moving upwards rather than left to right. Tom Lister has one like this, he sent me a picture of it. I saw the very distinctive amber filter light but he doesn't know what it's for either! Maybe this is a clue though for those of us who research this sort of thing.

water in fuel filter? try draining the filter and see if it goes out.

dear Dave,David, and Steve, changing the fuel filter got rid of the light and terrance is now bombing along with a clear dashboard and a slight improvement in pickup i think , thanks for the advice.

fill your expansion bottle!

- (#8446) david miller, 11 May 03 5:59

Just a point - if you have the expansion bottle light coming on, it is probably worth checking the radiator as well - WHEN IT IS COOL, NOT HOT.
IF you have no water in the expansion bottle it is possible that the radiator has found it's way a bit low too.

I usually check my water every two weeks max, but a couple of weeks back I didn't check it before we took a little trip (500km) and the light came on when I next took it out. I immediately filled the expansion bottle, and when it had cooled down later, I checked the radiator itself. It took about a litre of coolant.
I am very wary of the temp and always keep an eye on it, and that was not a problem, so no damage done (apparently).

The moral of the story is
if the water level light comes on, don't just assume that filling the expansion bottle is enough. The light will go out, but that doesn't mean that there is any water in the radiator!
(And the water will to some extent flow from the expansion bottle back to the radiator, but if there's not much there now, it could be to late).

Dave.

hello all.
great web sites for townies. good to see so much time and effort put into these pages and links. cant seem to start a string on ace answers so i hope i get some feed back this route.
q. cant see any turbo lights on my dashboard, although there seems to be a missing indicator(blown bulb?) to the left of the low coolant level indicator on the row of self test lamps running along the bottom of my dials.should there be a green lamp at this position?
q. following first start up, the auto box seems to be very lazy and slipping a bit. hazzardous if pulling out of a junction. an oil change is iminent as its a brown oil(brown g/box oil from factory or falicy?)at presnt and ive been led to believe this is a toyota g/box trait. true or false.
any correspomdants would be much appreciated. got a 92 liteace 2lt td,4wd, tinted windows, no cool box, no electronic suspension but we reckon its great. first mot from 2 years ago sais 03kms as indicated milage, last years sais 13,000miles and now its up to 18,000 miles. igot no idea if this is genuine or what sort of liteace ive ended up with for 3 grand but its in pretty fine fettle and im hoping to get much pleasure from it. what a van! see you at southport!!

Green turbo light in rev counter illuminates when turbo comes on boost around 1700rpm, amber overboost light indicates trouble, so you don't want that on, as regards the pulling out of juctions when cold, this is normal, remember, when you first start up, all the oils are thicker, takes power from the engine, the alternator is trying to recharge all the power you sapped from the battery at start up, this takes power from the engine, also the heater plugs are in their 'post heat' cycle & taking valuable power, if you still have a viscous fan, then this is running for a few seconds after startup, so takes more power and bearing in mind the 2CT is not exactly over powered at the best of times, you have much less than the optimum amount of power, so those quick take offs are impossible. I normally run ours for a couple of minutes before going anywhere, cures the prob.

Rob, thanks for your response, much appreciated although I still aint got no turbo lights!! This 92 litie only has screws around the rev counter Im sure. Later model than what you describe as Ive read all the previous answers on the web site searching for a solution and none corespond with my dash layout. Im in Greenland at the moment and so working from memory so its probably better that I waiy until I get back home for another look and I can explain more thoroughly after further inspection. Loads of Toyota 4wheel drives here, but certainly no townaces . Craig.

Facelift models (post 92) don't have the two lights that you have, Rob. There's only one, and it's a fault indicator (overpressure) I'd have though that it'd come on when the ignition is first turned on as bulb test tho, maybe the bulb's blown...

Hello Craig.
To respond to you question about the automatic transmission oil.
Usually the automatic transmission oil is bright red, I’ve not heard of brown before, but as it gets old it does turn very dark and thick. Usually the gears change with a slight clonk. If your transmission is slipping, the gear change can take a second or more, and is usually a sign that all is not well I’m afraid. See if you can find a local automatic specialist. They will be able to test the unit, and change the oil if needs be.

Incidentally, I have been perusing some old car manuals I have, and most say change the automatic transmission oil at 24,000 miles or two years, That’s about 40,000Km in a townace.

Hope that helps
dave Bright
