(Home) That old starter problem

It's probably a one-off, but I had the same starter trouble that everyone else seems to experience (good electrics, but intermittent dead starter)and the answer turned out to be a bit obscure but relatively easy to fix. It wasn't the connections; it wasn't voltage drop; it wasn't the contact in the solenoid switch... When I stripped it down on the bench I found a 'dry' solder joint on the solenoid coil connections. Not immediately obvious - I put it all back once having missed it - but a quick clean and re-solder and away she went. The moral? Keep your eyes open and don't jump to conclusions!
