My filter light has come on very faint.......
is it to warn that the filter needs changing or that water is in the filter......

Shouldn't be faint - a float switch positively indicates water in the base of the filter bowl. If it's faint, I'd look for a bad earth or check the voltage regulator...
Drain the filter and see if it goes out...
