(Home) Auto tranny

Just for info, maybe someone has a idea on what it is. Have a 92 Jap import townie royal lounge 2 litre petrol 3Y-EU with auto tranny. Has 83 thousand k on the clock. Today found it was slipping when starting from stand still then would kick in......when i got home and was reversing it made horrible grinding noises. Also does this when starting in first gear. When it changes to second and so on all is fine. So reverse and 1st are poked lol. This problem came on suddenly. Am very happy i got a 3 year warranty on this beast (3 months old) Has been dropped off at garage and will be getting worked on from Monday. Will post back later let you know what problem is and cost (that i wont have "yay") to get repaired. Great message board and a big credit to those who are helping one another.

Well what a nightmare to get my tranny fixed. Was a lot of damage so much in fact they had to get me another box. Then they had problems with torque converter not fitting properly as box was a newer model etc. In the end im a happy chappy and its running real sweet. However i have one question that someone may be able to assist me in. When accelrator is half down she changes through the gears beautifully including going into 4th. However i have noticed that if only light acceleration is used it seems to hang in 3rd for some time before it goes to 4th. Is there a adjustment that i could tell the mechanic of to allow it to get into 4th a little bit earlier when not under load and under light acceleration ?????

slacken the kickdown cable off a bit. Best 'changes seem to be when the cable is a bit looser than spec.

David is right
Also you could just try taking your foot off the accelerator pedal for a second - this should allow it to drop into 4th
I actually like the fact that this technique adds an element of control over an auto box
