(Home) Crankshaft pulley removal

I am trying to fit a new cambelt to my Townace 2c-t. All going well untill the actual removal of the crankshaft pully. I have attempted to 'lock' the cambelt by applying a 17mm spanner to the top camshaft nut. Even using a longish torque wrench the cranckshaft pully won't budge. Is there a better way? (not to keen on using the starter motor idea, but if that's the only alternative...)Also please confirm the crankshaft pully is a normal thread i.e undo anti-clockwise. thanks Jeff

Normal thread, yes. Starter method works well, otherwise air tool, or lock the crank at the ring gear.
If you're doing the starter thing, make sure the breaker bar is firmly pressed against chassis or body (bit of wood for protection), and barely touch the key. The engine only needs to turn a quarter turn. To be really safe, disconnect the stop solenoid wire on the injection pump.

Thanks for that David. I much prefer to lock the crank at the ring gear as this also provides a means for the reassembly. My option appeared to be removing the starter motor in order to lock the ring gear. On inspecting the bell housing, on the drivers side I found a small hole, directly over where I estimated the teeth of the flywheel to be. Sure enough putting a thin screwdriver in the hole locked the flywheel. Mine is a 2WD so it might be different for other models, but it's definitly worth looking for, and seems less risky than using the starter motor. The locking nut is released now, just need to get the pully off. Looked at the Ace Archive and there are a couple of ideas for removing this but I have decided to invest in a puller. thanks again Jeff
