(Home) Starter contacts

Hi all excellent web site many an hour spent reading. The problem I've got is the usual one with the intermittent starting I've taken the starter apart and found that the contacts at the solonoid were worn out. I have fabricated replacements with copper pipe but as the copper is softer they won't last long. I found a guy localy who will supply replacements but he wants £38 for the pair.I believe I read that Dave Miller replaced his for a fiver where from? If anybody knows where I can get them from at a decent price pls let me know.

Townace is a 2wd 1990 2ct engine.

The engine is the same as the on fitted in the Carina E. The only difference is a few bolt on parts which on the Carina are european supply. Also obviously the Carina was transversly mounted. How I wish I'd 'borrowed' a few bits from work when I used to build Carina's.

£38 for a pair? He's having a laugh. Gold plated perhaps...
Anyway, any auto electrical specialist will have them. Don't say they're for an import, just walk in with them and ask for a pair (or indeed a kit, complete with bolts and insulators) Now fair enough, I'm sort of in the trade, but you should certainly get sorted for under £20. Jeez, for £38 you could go to the dealer!

Any chance the price included the moving contact/ plunger???

I got a pair of contacts from my local carlectrics shop for £1 each. They only had the small contact so I used one to replace the larger one and it works fine. Cleaned up the centre contact with a wire brush. I'm not scared of starter motors any more! I've had my 2wd 2LTD super extra for 3 years and there has been the odd starter problem but it got unbearable when I had an immobilised fitted for Tesco insurance in May this year. New contacts fixed the problem.
ps I've never posted before so forgive me if it pops up in the wrong place.
