(Home) Water pump, sourcing, removal, to fix leak

Hi there, Problem. Just changed antifreeze on G reg Townace 4wd Auto, Bled system, went for road test and returned home happy.... until i saw a puddle of new antifreeze under engine. I checked the hoses i removed and they were bone dry. Further inspection saw dripping from behind fan pulley. Is this possible by just changing coolant ? There was no leaks B4 !!

Unfortunately, yes. Antifreeze is well known for it's "searching" capabilities and seems to find a minute hole where ordinary water will not. I think you should live with it for a while and, only if it gets worse, have the pump out and check the seals

Many thanks, it is leaking quite fast, looks like im in for a busy weekend ! .... If i can find a pump.

2C engines all use the same pump, and if you've no Blueprint dealers nearby, I think QH do one as well...

phoned local factors for a pump, they said they had one. so i went to have a look but it was totally wrong, too small, and it was fan belt driven type and not a cam belt type. this was a blue print type. is it a main dealer part only ???

it's for a different engine then. they've got it wrong...

toyota number for cross reference is 16100-69295

ADL water pump number is ADT39114, get your supplier to show you this one. I suspect they showed you one for a petrol or spacie, which is fan belt not cam belt driven. HTH Rob.

Hi again, got my water pump today. QH one. £35.00 inc VAT. Looks a right B*****D to fit. does the fuel pump have to come off ?? How long of a job is it ??

- (#9063) DARREN, 9 Jun 03 12:57

no, inj. pump can stay. You can pull the waterpump off the front of it. Just need to pop the pulley off.

It's not much more than a timing belt job (simpler in that the bottom pulley can stay on...) but you might want to do the belt while you're in there.

If you've the floor out already, half a day should do it.

sorry to sound dumb, but ive had another look at the fuel pump and it looks like its bolted to the back side of the water pump, if i am right, then do i just mark off its position and make sure it goes back there on re-build??? many thanks.

- (#9065) Darren, 9 Jun 03 15:38

Yes Darren, make sure that it is marked so that you re-bolt it at the correct location. David is right, the fuel pump does not have to come off, (you can leave all the pipework connected) but, you are correct also, there are two studs in the back of the water pump casting, which the fuel pump bolts to.

just to let you know, fitted water pump yesterday, like you said , once floor out of way, quite easy, took 3 hours, only problem was 2 leaks afterwards, both radiator drain plugs were leaking, fixed with a smear of blue hylomar on each plug. many thanks for all your help and advice.
