(Home) Manuals and such

I have recently become an owner of a 1991 town ace EFI (the 8 person family truckster supreme). My previous car was a townace GL (simple delivery van style). My question is
Are the names and lettering of the van the same here (I live in Japan) as elsewhere in the world? Also, I have access to workshop, parts, and other manuals direct from a friend at...Toyota (whispered in reverence). They are in Japanese but if there are enough takers I would be willing to translate them.

indeed they are- we only get townies as hand-me-downs from japan as they approach shaken time. the uk got the spacecruiser, the us got the van, australia gets the tarago and now the townace sbv (van version of the noah)
in the uk we've been able to scavenge parts cds, engine manuals, full manuals for the us models, russian manuals, but we've never been able to find a full manual for a jap- market townie.

the most critical info for many of us is wiring diagrams- wiring colours seem to differ for the japanese home market, and no other market has the same range of extras like tems etc.

any info you can acquire would be appreciated worldwide!

Probably a minority request but I have been looking for service info for my Jan 92 hiace supercustom 4wd (3L engine - LH 107)
Local Toyota cant/wont help
Bits can be got or adapted but what I would like in particular is service specifications that I may need in the future - ie
tappet settings, steering geometry settings, infact any setting that requires periodic adjustment or measuring
The 3L engine was never intended for UK market and its very rare here (can't source any info other than old toyota parts disc)
People periodically ask about curtains - toyota can order me curtains from Japan but say the curtain rails, their clips and plastic cover mouldings cannot be obtained - is this the case over there?

Hello Rob,

I presently have a list of some 47 people who said they were interested in a translated manual but I suppose the stickier question that nobody has asked yet is the cost of such an article along with the costs for your translation and the delivery charges?

make that 48 Mark, It seems to be the only real reason that local garage services are unwilling to work on these vehicles is their lack of manuals.

Another definite starter for a manual here in New Zealand.
Cheers,TAS.

I will round that up to an even 50.

I’m not sure if I am on this list or not, but I was impressed with the Russian manual Mark showed to me at the spring ace jam, and I would certainly want to have a copy if it were translated. I was particularly impressed with the way that it shows how to Prise things apart.

I guess the problem is finding, and then recovering, the £2,500 or so that the translation will cost.

One possible solution is to start afresh with the list of people you have, and see who would be prepared to pay up front to fund the translation. 50 people would equate to £50 each or so.

These people could then receive a free copy on a CD. If more copies of the CD were then sold, the revenue could be used to fund the web hosting for yourself and Dave Mason. This may allow you both to afford sites with greater band width, which when all said and done, benefits all of us.

So count me in for a copy if you get it translated, and if you need payment up front, let me know.

I didn't mean to hog the thread started by Rob, with my own plea for "translated manual wanters" and some errors have already been discovered with the Russian translation I have. The main one being the differences in the wiring loom colours.

With this in mind, I wait with baited breath to here from Rob regarding an authentic manual from Japan that can be translated into english. On the idea of cost, when I issued an e-mail to all those on the list asking them what they felt would be a reasonable price to pay for such a translation, the main response was about £20-30. This would mean a list of nearer 100.

Some owners also felt the information within the manual would be of no extra use than the RM025E available from Toyota for a fraction of the cost of translation.

I point these problems and comments out freely because I would not like to see anybody feel they had been mislead into thinking this manual would be a solution to all their problems.

For lite aces I see amazon.fr stock a book on Toyota Lite
Ace, familial fourgon, the picture on the front looks familiar - has anyone
had a look at it, is it any good?. Hopefully once you've got the english for
a few french technical words the rest should be fairly straightforward?
