Try Toyota and see if you can get the engine manual for the 2Y/3Y series (think the part # is RM017E). Also try a few Google searches for the big scrappies and specialist Jap importers as well as any breakers in your area - you may just get lucky.

Toyota engine repair manual part # RM017E is availiable in Australia, last reprinted april 2002. It cover the Y series engines, 1Y, 2Y, 3Y & 4Y and differing combinations of C,U & E. It states that Y series engines were fitted to Corona, Cressida, Crown, Liteace, Model-F (tarago), Stout, Hilux, Hiace, Dyna100, Dyna150 & Dyna.

If you are after a second hand engine you should check these other vehicles. There is apprently some differences in carbs, distributor, alternator. But they should be fairly minor

In Aus, When you get a second hand motor from Japan, the people will take all the extra bits off your old motor, and if they are good enough, put them on the new one. That avoids the problem of different bits, as most bolt onto the same fitting (apparently). It is also cheaper for you.

If you are looking at putting in a bigger motor, then go the whole hog and fit 4Y - the standard motor in the US it seems. I know of at least one in Perth, Aus, that has a 4Y conversion done and it is a straight swap!

I went from a 2Y to a 3Y with my old one, but a 4Y was only $200 extra (too much at the time though).

There are full service and repair manuals available for the 'Tarago' as it is called here from Haynes etc, which are pretty good, but unfortunately they don't cover the 2CT engine that our Ace's have!

Dave.

P.S. the 3Y was noticably more powerful!

for a 75 Toyota Tarago, is it possible to swap the automatic gearbox and replace it with a manual gearbox, and if so what are the options available and any difficulties that may be encounterd. Tab

- (#10119) Tab Dec, 31 Jul 03 23:15

yes, but you'll have to swap pedal box and probably rear engine mounting, driveshaft, and removeable floor (to accomodate the shifter)

It is possible, but a BIG job.
There are cosmetic differences inside, so either anew cetre console or make up a pretty one. The linkages will also have to be mounted and sorted. There are a few mechanical differences between the engine and driveshaft as well.
Having said all of that, it certainly is possible - there is bloke in the US (Toyota Vans website) who has done this conversion to a 4X4 Toyota Van, and that one has the added complexity of the transfer case and front propshaft!

It would be a fun project for someone who is persistent, but I can't help wondering if would be easier to just sell it and buy a manual one!

looking for info/specs/diagram for carbie for 1983 tarago y2 1800 motor. ive had it to garage twice and still not functioning properly so want to look at it myself. apparently not many people like workin on them any help appreciated

- (#10122) steve dixon, 7 Aug 03 20:07

Where are you Steve?
I notice the Optus address- does that mean Australia?

If yes, then the Tarago/Model F Manual is available from Gregory's at least. Any good motor parts shop will have or be able to get it, and even places like K-Mart, Target will have them.

It covers everything about these vans. Mine is for the carby model, but also has injected info.

If you are anywhere near Freo, W.A. or Subiaco I can photocopy the pages for you and you can pick them up.
I don't have a scanner though.

You are still better off buying the manual if you can afford it.

Can anyone give details on which oil filters fit the 2CT diesel engine ? Live in Australia

Thanks

Eddie

Any good small motor parts shop should be able to give you advice on it.
I THINK the Repco number is A334, with the air filter being Z335 (may be the other way round!). It is easy with air filter - drive to the shop, take it out, show it to them and get them to match it.
Some of the smaller shops will crawl under your van and check the oil filter to make sure of the size etc.

I advise you not to use Repco filters, simply because they are expensive.
To my recollection, the Repco filters were each around the $50.00 mark, while the "other brands" that I have used since were closer to about $35.00 (In Perth).

The best advice to you is to keep a log book, or at the very least keep a record book in the glove box, which has all these maintenance part numbers recorded.
That way, next time you will simply have to look it up, without all this trouble.
It is worth keeping the log book of your fuel and service costs anyway.
