(Home) Surge in idle speed

Can anyone help me? I have a Townace 2.0 efi (petrol)automatic. After the engine has been running for about 10 to 15 minutes the idle speed suddenly shoots up to about 1500 rpm from 800rpm and stays there. This happens when the gear is in Neutral or in Park. Once drive or reverse are selected things are back to normal until I put the gear shift into neutral again. Any idea what is happening?

no idea, but before worrying too much, clean the throttle body and idle actuator with a spray of carb cleaner. After that, I'd look at temp. sensors...

Hi david
When you say idle actuator do you mean that little black plastic thingmebob on the top of the fuel pump, as i have the same occurance as ray and i thought it was an intentional operation devised by our japanese friends to impress us yet again. also where are the sensors you mentioned?. It hasn't caused me any problems as yet and it has been doing it since i've had the vehicle.

no, Brian, Ray's car is Petrol not Diesel. You sound like you've either got an air leak around the fuel filter, or the thermo wax on the bottom of the pump is failing- the coolant passage scales up, then no flow= fast idle. Check the device and the hoses to it for clogging

Thanks david
I must clean my specs before i read the threads again. I will try as you suggest and keep you informed.

Thanks for the help. However I had to take to the garage in the end. Apparantly there was a hole in the air intake pipe causing the problem. Replacement has rectified this.(Part was hard to come by!)
