i have been told off before for painting a bleak picture of towing with a townace , however unless you are towing something very light i would say despite the advantage of just over one and a half tons its only got a limited engine output which doesnt lend itself to towing . If you have an automatic transmission then the cooler for it is unforunately a part of the main radiator and although this might help the transmission to keep cool , it certainly doesnt help the engine . Im just pointing out the pitfalls, having said that there are owners who can and do tow with a townace . i go to france every year , i needed more luggage space and opted
for a twin roofbox set up to house all the gear . the tent goes in the back behind the seats . if its just for luggage then i can send you an e mail with a pic . regards jim

Jim,

What kind of roof is your townie (skylites, moonroof or none)? I'd be interested in fitting a roofbox on mine (skylites) but I am scared at the simple thouhgt it. Would appreciate emailing me a pic of what you have. Thanks.

Jim
I am also interested in your setup. Could I have a picture as well please. Also can you detail the parts, suppliers and costs?
My MasterAce has 6 skylights along the sides.
Thanks.

Hi Jim.
I too am interested in getting a roof box for next years hols, and I have Just seen your photo on Ace Answers. It only has one box though, do you have a second box that bolts on next to it? or have you updated it since that photo was posted. I am also interested to know about the roof bars. Are they standard or a special type due to the roof height/gutter mounting? Nice looking bus by the way.

Thule list Townace (2wd and 4wd) as using the 27cm lift bars. Have a look at the www.roofbox.co.uk site for more info, prices, etc.

hi all , i started off with thule high lift bars and a fapa alta roofbox (shown in ace answers pic), however i have progressed to twin set up using 2 long thin Kamei grizzly roofboxs which open left and right - u can use the same thule roofbars with these - its about as much capacity as you can get - the roofbox company supplied them -

i will supply a pic soon , i take my roofbars off as a precaution due to thieves sadly , but i will be refitting them soon . i have the skylight set up on mine , the bars are as follows
thule rapid 135cm bars (2) no 762
Thule high feet (4) no 420
the boxes are your own choice but two Kamei Grizzly 310 boxes give a whopping 620 litres compared with the 480 litres from my fapa alto (which was a big box)
they fit side by side and are of the long medium type
high qaulity locks and materials
a small ali ladder is needed from B and Q for about 15 qiud
dont get cheap bars the thule ones are well made swedish engineering and cost about 100 pounds
you can buy two grizzly,s for £375

We use the Paddy Hopkirk light commercial roof rack and it fits fine on both the Townie and the Hi Ace with lots of adjustment for height and width.

We've had 5 kayaks on top using upstands (custom made by a friend!) and there was still space.

Both the Townie and Hi-Ace have / had moon roof front and back.

I have a towbar on my Liteace 2.0 GXL and I have towed a friend's quad (Yamaha Banshee) on a trailer made from an old trailer-tent with no problem. It's just a case of not driving the outfit too hard.
However, since having the towbar fitted, I cannot get the tailgate to shut properly. Any ideas for curing this out there?
