(Home) High mileage, maintenance

Just wondering if anyone has a townie with high milage on it? When I tell people i have 179,000 kilomters on my clock, they tell me that is nothing for a toyota diesel motor. Has anyone exceeded 4 or 500,000? I have a friend in the states who has a toyota carola with over 400,000 (640,000 kilometers ) miles on the clock and all he has done to the car besides basic maintaince is change a gear in the transmission. And the car still runs fine. Should we expect the same high milage from our townies?

Like many other vehicles, high and trouble free mileages do depend on the quality and frequency of servicing. A diesel engine requires more frequent oil changes than it's petrol equivalent and 3000 miles between changes is about right. Regular changing of all the filters, regular checks on the levels (awkward on a Townace but, probably, more necessary than "ordinary" vehicles)and regular inspections of belts, transmission oils and the cooling system, coupled with the splendid Toyota "build quality", should ensure that your Townace will still be running well when other, inferior vehicles, are rusting away in the breakers yard.
