I had an old Tarago (Spacecruise/Van/whatever) which is a bit smaller than the HiAce. It had the Carby 2Y motor in it.
My normal was between 9-10 km per litre.
How many litres in a gallon?

My smaller vehicle should use less fuel, so you should use a bit more than that, but also by 1987 you should have injection which should improve it a bit.

When converting from litres to gallons, make sure you use the appropriate conversion - U.S. Gallons, or Imperial Gallons? They are different!

Mine's a lite-ace 89/90, 1800 petrol carb auto, on a stedy 65ish, it can return about 30 mpg, gets a bit heavy around town though

Can someone out there please tell me how you have access to change the headligh bulbs on a Townace mastersurf.

Thanks

Hello Jet Lim,

Although you should have perhaps started a new thread, I too have a Masterace Surf. In order to gain access to the front headlamp unit you will need to remove the philips screw on the side of the side light unit and prise it forward. Twist the connector and unplug it to get the unit out of your way. You should have the front clear "TOYOTA" panel as mine has. To remove this you need to locate 3 spring clips in the lower grill section that need to be pinched/pushed-up. You will now be able to pull the central panel out. You should then see the 10mm bolts that hold the headlamp unit in place on either side of it.

The spring clips are a little tricky and quite delicate, I only have one left working.

I have the chance to buy a 2.0 litre auto petrol injection Townace at a very reasonable price. I havn't yet taken the plunge as I'm a bit worried what the m.p.g. might be. Does anyone know what I could expect on mixed traffic motoring. Which is faster and which has a higher cruising speed - petrol or diesel? Anything else I should know about in the petrol versus diesel argument? Thanks

Can't help with the injected petrol, but my old manual, Carby Tarago(Aussie version) did around 11ltrs per 100kms. You will lose a bit with the auto, but gain it with the injection - so about that should be right.
Generally, the petrol will be faster, a bit thirstier, and maintenance costs will be lower. Add to that the motor is more easily recognised by mechanics, and the fix up cost of petrol are generally lower.

Diesel will accelerate a bit slower, be a fraction noisier, needs more frequent servicing (and hence more service cost), but you will get better fuel numbers out of it. My MasterAce Surf gives about 500 kms to 45ltrs used around town (better on a cruise), but it is Auto, dual aircon with the cold box (which we have running constantly), and power steered, all of which our old van didn't have.

The same accessories on both would see the diesel further in front, I would think.

As to cruising speed - irrelevant. Both will break the speed limits, but the diesel takes a little longer to get there!

The fuel won't be great, but is it worth the extra for all the good points of one of these vans?

Most of us think so.

Dave.

i notice that the compression ratio in diesel models are greater than the compression models in petrol models why os that so and also what are the advantages/disadvantages of buying a diesel model compared to a petrol model

cc for cc - diesel more torque and less fuel, petrol more speed

comp ratio is higher in diesels because it's the heat of compression, not a spark, that ignites the fuel.

how good it is? I heard that once I start putting high octane petrol, I should never use normal petrol. Is that true?
