(Home) 3y camshaft timing

Hello! I'm Deric, I think the camshaft timing on my 3Y engine is incorrect from the repairs done by the mechanic of the previous owner, after I take off the timing gear cover I can see that it's a chain driven type with one dot each on the camshaft gear n crankshaft gear, but I can't seem to see where the timing mark is on the cover, where do I point the dot to check if the timing is correct, how do I check the timing of the camshaft? Thank you.

I'd guess it's on the chain. jap practice is to have a light- coloured link that is matched to one of the dots, and either another coloured link for the other or a measurement for the number of links between the dots... Someone with the Y- series manual will no doubt confirm for you.

well, David, I did notice that there're two chain link with slightly lighter colour than the rest of link, can anyone comfirm that this is how we check the timing for the 3Y, by matching the lighter colour link to the dot.......btw thank you David.

Yes halt right. When installing the crankshft and camshaft sprockets they have a a set key that matches with a mark on the back plate, both at 12 o/c. There are then marks ob both sprockets which the different colour links match to. the sprockets need to be fitted in place within the chain then installed on the shafts, otherwise you can stretch/damage the chain. Install the crankshaft pulley the torque the cansft up to 67 ft-lb, Remove the pulley and install the tensioner bolts to 13 ft-lb, replace cover (new gasket if required) bolts to 52 in-lb and finally crankshaft pu;;ey to 116 ft-lb. source Toyota publication RM017E so I guess it's right.
