(Home) Diesel additives

what are you using? an old guy at my local fuel station told me he has used vegatable oil for the last 25 years he puts in 1litre to every 25 litres diesel! he has a 1971 land rover that has done 200000 miles on its original engine.

I've just started using a dollop of synthetic 2-stroke oil (Stihl brand) - no idea if there is any value in this but it did help a petrol car we used to have with a sticky needle valve in the carb.

The veg oil would add a little lubrication and burn in place of diesel and therefore be subject to road fuel duty. I should think that at that mix it would do little or no good as the diesel would wash it away.
I would expect any diesel engine to run for 200,000 providing there have been no problems. Take a look at the milage on your next taxi/bus ride.

It might interest you to know That diesel fuel made from vegetable oil is now quite common. It is known as "Biodiesel" and so I'm told it is better for your engine and the emmissions are far less than that of conventional Diesel (Sulphur dioxide emmissions are almost non-existant!). For more information try looking at www.veggievan.org.

Biodiesel is a blend, with sometimes as little as 5%, veg oil with diesel.
Similar pump price as diesel.
Not quite a green fuel or great saving.
All covered on the above mentioned site.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you may have to replace all or most of the seals in your fuel system as the true veg or seed oil tends to perish them. It is not such a problem with the newer type seals though!

The original Diesel engine was built to run on Peanut oil by the way!

Yes, a lot of people would advocate using a taste of 2- stroke oil to increase the lubricity of ULSD. But only use good quality ashless synthetic stuff, or your injectors WILL coke up. If you want to use a true additive, try Stanadyne.

Here's a thread (4 or 5 posts down)on 50/50 rapeseed oil (lidl) and deisel. (not for me though!)
