Does anyone know what refrigerant can be used in a 1991 Townace?? What is the replacement for R12?

Hello Gwen.
Refrigerant replacement has been something of an emotive subject, and is well covered on Ace Answers.

Basically, R12 gas is full of CFC's and that's why it was outlawed. A replacement gas, R134 was produced as an alternative to R12, but it requires part of the system to be converted, and carries a price to it. Since then other refrigerant gasses have been produced, and are commonly known as blended, or drop in gasses. The type I had installed earlier this year was RS24. Its a straight drop in replacement, not requiring conversion of the system, and I'm happy to say that it cost £220 less than converting to R134, and is still working well in this heat.

Have a thumb through yellow pages, or yell.com, look for vehicle air-conditioning specialists in your area, and phone some of them for quotes.

Hope that helps
