(Home) Fuel gauge loopy

I've had a look at Ace answers and can only find one reference to fuel gauges and it doesn't seem to be quite the same problem. My fuel gauge needle keeps jumping all over the place and it's impossible to get a good idea of how much fuel is left. It appears that whatever dampens the needle movement isn't working so the gauge is registering the fuel being sloshed around in the tank. The low fuel light however does appear to be working correctly. What should I be looking for? Is the problem likely to be at the sender end or the gauge end and how easy is it to get to the fuel gauge?

Cheers.
Martin.
