Or, is the heat shield loose? You can check this by pushing the drivers seat forward, lifting the carpet over the engine bay, and removing the inspection cover.

Kayiu. You can get one of the best manuals for the 1C, 2C and 2C-T engines (fitted to the diesel Townace,)
from the Toyota dealer. Part No RMO25E. It covers the engine, alternator, fuel system, lubrication system etc and is an essential tool for the Townace owner. It costs less than 10GBP.

Willie, I get the same sort of noise! Sometimes when you stand outside the vehicle it sounds like an alarm bell going off. I'll have to check John's suggestion. Years ago, in my mechanicing days, I had a very similar noise and it was the altinator pulley breaking up so I presumed I'd got a similar problem, especially as there are so many pulleys on the blooming thing!

Just remembered, I tried to locate the source a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to be coming from the lower front part of the engine when I got underneath; which is what made me think it could be one of the pulleys.

Stewart, check the crank pulley ASAP. four small bolts hold the front one to the main one, and a BIG bolt holding the main one. Problems in this department can be expensive...

Ooooer...Don't like the sound of this David. I'm going to have to have a look tomorrow (today!) now.....Keep you informed...!

Just been up on the ramps and found that alarm bell! It turned out to be the power steering pump adjusting bracket hanging loose; which was rattling on the pump body on tickover. The bolt that locates it on the pump is missing...May be broken off?...So I've just taken it off altogether. I tried to check the thread of the one that was missing but with everything else in situ it's rather a difficult blighter to get at. Reckon the pump pivot bolt must have been done up extra tight to compensate for this at some time, so I'm planning to leave plenty of extra time when it comes to raplacing the drive belt!!

Thanks David for 'G'ing me up to get out there and find it.
