can anyone help me, I need an alternator for my 1990 2.0 cruiser,it has aa 3y engine.I live 25 miles north of Aberdeen, so there are not that many up here.is there any other toyota that the 3y engine was in, so i might get an alternator from that.I just fell across this site, its fantastic,thought I was alone!!!

Mark, why do you need a new alternator? Is the old one not repairable? If it is repairable your local car electrical specialist should have no problem repairing it. I used to own a Space Cruiser before I bought my Townie and I had a alternator problem. Got it repaired for £60.00 if I remember right. hth.

Bill,
my alternator siezed up and caught fire! Its beyond repair,so down to finding a new one,not an easy task by the look of things,unless I buy new,and thats not a happy thought.

Check out some of the larger scrappies that do on-line listings and deliver by post such as Jap parts. I forget the addresses but a search on Google should turn something up.

unfortunately the spacecruiser alternator fits nothing else, the same engine was used in the hilux 4x4 from 1984-1989ish, wether they will in fact be interchangable is unknown by my good self.

the specific alternator perhaps, but Toyota alts. generally have the same terminals. Round connector with three spades? I'd guess that most if not all have the same fixing points, the bracket making the difference.(edit, looked on the cd and the older ones have the same three point mount as older Lucas units, the later internal fan units have a long mount with a through- bolt)
So if you don't mind a tramp round the local yards and can put up with a different current rating, you should get sorted OK. Might just have to swap pulleys.
Is yours internal or external fan?

BTW, be grateful you don't drive an Astra turboD- an alternator for the Isuzu lump is around £650 from the dealers...
