(Home) Transmission.....missing top gear

my transmission doesn`t seem to want to go to fourth gear anymore and i wondered if anybody could advise. the o/d is off. may need topping up with fluid but i`m not sure where it goes or what type!! any help would be great. thanks in advance.........

Umm, overdrive should be ON...

erm, there's plenty of info in the archives about fluid. Dexron II, fills through the dipstick, check with engine running. Too little fluid will burn it out...

With regards to my earlier message, Checked fluid and level seems to be right.Tranny still wont find 4th gear.Overdrive is on(dash light off. Any advice would be great......bob

Exactly what vehicle are we talking about? Surely most (?) Townaces only have 3 forward gears and the effect of the 4th gear is produced by the overdrive.

Check the two cables that run down past the fuel filter and to the transmission overdrive solenoid,the solenoid also has a plug connection at this point.If the cable is connected and intact then check for 12v at the plug and solenoid with the overdrive on,12v should be present.

Vehicle is an `f` reg townie 4wd.

Assume if you drive at say 50mph and play with the overdrive switch nothing happens?
If so try Phil's advice.
You could have a look at the wiring to/from the o/d switch - on odd occasions a squirt of wd 40 into electric switches can clean the internal tracks and get them working again
