(Home) Excessive smoke on lucida

A friend has a P reg Lucida Emina 4x4 auto wich has done 63000mls. last week he noticed that the vehicle was excessivly smoking under load, I have looked at it & I think she is over fueling it has a 3CT-E engine with an electronically controlled injection pump. I have found that he repaced the air filter with a K&N panel filter & a service was carried out a week ago, one final point is a garage was due to change the timng belt & got half way into stripping the engine before they had to stop due to it requiring a special tool to remove the crank pulley. The main question is does anyone think the air filter is causing the ecu controlled pump to over fuel due the extra air coming into the engine or can anyone advise on where the car can be taken to get the ecu adjusted to compensate for over fueling?

Tell him to check for air leaks in the intake system, get the timing checked, and if that's OK have the injectors overhauled. The electronic injection system has no adjusments, and if there was a fault, the warning lamp should be on...

Thanks to David Miller for your diagnisis about the smoke from the Exhaust on my mate's Lucida. The garage who had attempted to change the timing belt had left the air intake off that goes to the turbo, the new garage who did the job yesterday also found the timing belt torn diagonally two thirds of the way, does anyone know how this could have happened as I am to the thinking this may have been done whilst they were trying to remove the auxillery pulley. anyway all is well now & I have just installed a Necvox double din DVD player with builtin screen with two more screens going in the rear AC unit in a couple of days.
