I suppose the real concern is whether the light is actually indicating that the glow plugs are actually being warmed up continually. This should be checked but I doubt that they are. I would look for a short near the bulb.

When the head was replaced, did all the connections go back on correctly?
When I had my cylinder head replaced recently, there were two leads that my mechanic couldn't remember disconnecting. One had a single thick black wire, and the other had two thinner wires, one brown and one white with a black stripe. David Miller points out somewhere on ace answers, that the single wire connects to the glow plug connector mounted on the side of the inlet manifold, and the two wire connection is an earth, and fits on the square fuel pipe clamp bracket.

Yes Dave. That was my problem a few years ago when a mechanic connected both wires together. The result was a short. The glowplug light came on but the glowplugs didn't glow. It wasn't until 8 months later when the weather turned cooler that I realised I had a problem. I had been starting ok without glowplugs for the best part of a year!

As Paul is experiencing an intermittent problem with the actual warning light and not I gather from the glowplug circuit, I'm guessing that the problem lies more with the warning light and immediate wiring.
