(Home) Heating

1995 townace royal lounge. Rear heating great. but front allways blowing cold. Replaced stat, rad cap and flushed system. I have noticed that bottom hose is not getting hot and the part of the raidiator at the bottom hose not getting hot but the rest of it is, my temp gauge just bellow norm I have one rad across bottom of van and one vertical. Any help.

Hi Viv
The bottom hose that is not getting hot, is that the hose on the main cooling system radiator, or the heater matrix? (If its the main cooling radiator, then that's good.)
How loose are the Hot cold controls for the front? (If they seem loose then maybe the cable has become disconnected.)

Yes it is the main cooling system hose I have checked the controls they do seem a bit loose but I can here the flap open and close.

The bottom hose on the cooling radiator should be cooler than the top. With no overheating problems, or symptoms, it suggests that the main radiator is doing its job by cooling the coolant within it.

Do you have climate control? Or is it a normal heater system with air conditioning?

Ok now please don’t get cross with the next question but hearing a flap move, doesn’t sound right for the hot and cold control, so are you by any chance operating the wrong lever? The flap controlls the desired airflow, to say defrost the windscreen or heat your feet etc. The hot cold selector operates a valve on the cooling system I think.

I have traced the cable from the heater control to a flap that seems to open and close very close to the floor checked all the other cables and they do whwt they are suposed to. I do not have climate control just heater and aircon. What I cant understand is that the matrix is not geting hot (I take it that the matix is the one that is horizontal under the van?) I have taken the drain plug out and flushed through refitted the plug and took the top hose of and flushed through agian the water seems to come out. I am woundering if it is the impeler on the water pump but I thought I would of seen some form of over heating. Any ideas.
Thanks for you input.

The radiator under the van is the secondary, horizontal cooling radiator. It connects to the main vertical radiator, and takes some of the coolant flow. The heater matrix is in the bus, just above the floor under the centre of the dashboard. Its possible that having just changed your coolant, an air lock persists in the front heater. The front heater has a heat sensitive valve that shuts off when the coolant is low.
Check the level of coolant in the filler neck, under the rad cap and top up if necessary. Then run the engine at normal temperature for a bit, with the heater in the hot position and the blower on.

Probably and air lock but also....
Check that the valve is operating under the floor at the front, dead center, two hose delivery and return enter the cabin through the floor to the heater matrix. The delivery has a valve that operates from the dash control.
The flap you can hear is just for taking the airflow from the heater

Many thanks for all the input, found the problem today found the cable to th heater valve was broken did a slight mod to the cable and everything ok.

Hello Terry.
Did you buy this from a dealer, or privately?
If you have any sort of warranty on it, you might want to take it back. Overheating can be expensive, and depending on how much you have paid and its condition, it may be a lost cause.

I'm not familiar with what you mean by bung? and it would help to know which radiator pipe have you taken off?
