(Home) Owner exporting Townie to USA

Hi. My family and I are moving to the USA in a few months compleat with the much loved Townie. Has anyone got any knowledge about exporting a vehicle to the States? What is the customs charge? Is it a fixed charge or a percentage of the total value of the vehicle? Any other hidden charges that I should know about? How do I go about changing the head lights for use in the States and for how long can I use it on UK plates before I need to register it on US plates? And if I should know any other points about vehicle exporting to the US that any of you know about then please tell me. Thanks. Bill.

You might have fun getting it into the States- Canada maybe, the US more difficult. They'll be wanting lights changed to DOT- compliant, and emissions may be a problem. I'll ask around on some US boards I'm on for you...

I have been told that the best way is to import into Canada, which is relatively easy, then once it is there, the transfer to the US is much simpler. But that is only word of mouth, and I don't know how accurate.

And if you think getting bits is difficult now, wait till you get there!

Dave.
