(Home) Mpg what is the norm

Hi i have a townie 2wd auto im getting 23.5 to the gallon is this normal if not any ideas?

Hello Russell.
23.5 MPG is bad. I believe that 2wd should be somewhere near 30MPG.
First and cheapest is to get some diesel additive to add to your fuel tank. I use Millers power plus.
Next change the air and fuel filters, and see how much it improves. The next step would be to disable the EGR valve by blocking the vacuum pipe. see ace answers for more information on that. If you still have low MPG, and I'm guessing that you also have a big smoke problem? you will be best off finding a diesel specialist who can renovate the injectors, and set up the fuel pump.
