Well, usually after a few months of ownership I get round to it out of curiosity/boredom.
91 Hiace Supercustom 2.8 non turbo auto 0-60mph time of around 23.6 seconds - same figures (give or take a tenth of a sec) with or without ECT button - this is a rolling start a idle speed.
Have any other Hiace owners succumbed to curiosity yet? I'd be intrested to know how the 2.4 and 3ltr turbos compare.

OK so no Ace Jams at Santa Pod!
Also tried it with/without EGR but no difference - well possibly half a sec but that could be my slow reactions - now sub 23 secs. Main issues with 0-60 is it takes a very long time to get from 50-60.
We know these vehicles are slow but is no one interested how slow?!
What about townie owners? or maybe I am a lone, very slow speed demon this week!
- (#11186) chris turner, 14 Oct 03 9:29
5 hours, 23 mins and 46 seconds (or that's what it seems like).
I race in my '2' and drive like a coffin dodger on a Sunday afternoon in my Townie - that's all it's designed for. Get real Chris. You bought your Ace for carrying space, comfort and toys (not necessarily in that order). If you wanted speed you would have looked for something else now wouldn't you? We know the acceleration is crap so why bother measuring it. I would also need a very long stretch of road (full length of M1?) in order to measure it. 23 seconds sounds depressing. I think I'd rather not know.
Neon lights, side skirts and spoiler next then? (LOL)
- (#11187) Ian Dunse, 14 Oct 03 11:18
Ian, you are an old sour-puss! :-) I know exactly why Chris measured his 0-60. It is all part of the fun of being a townie fanatic. I used to take pride in the way the front of my wonder-machine would rear up when I floored the pedal (though now I've backed off the diesel pump to improve the mpg the effect is sadly diminished...).
And just exactly what is wrong with neon lights and spoilers? You'll be telling me you don't like nodding dogs and furry dice next. :-)
- (#11188) Tom Lister, 14 Oct 03 14:52
Oops - didnt mean to provoke
Reasons for the question are-
Reference/benchmark, knowledge and comparison
Such info (and mpg etc.)can be found for most euro vehicles and can come in to play at the time of choosing the next vehicle to run + also if the vehicle doesn't hit the 0-60 benchmark then its another useful indicator of care and attention needed.
As an example a 70s vw camper 1700cc takes (apparently)34.9 sec to 62mph whilst the 1800 takes 24.8 sec - (both give better mpg than my hiace) - now if I wanted an old VW this info would obviously influence my purchasing decision.
Read a couple of threads of the front end rising on acceleration (dodgy dampers or raw power?) and if its not down to dodgy dampers then I'd like that effect in my next ace
You are right Ian - I didn't get the bus for speed and certainly have no regrets but if I can get the same package with more oomph.....
I wasn't throwing down a gauntlet (now that would be funny) - just interested...
The thought of a load of ace owners (stop watch in hand) attempting to burn out of the nearest layby to 60mph on a Tuesday evening would certainly have the boys in blue scratching their heads
Now who can beat 23 secs?!!
- (#11189) chris turner, 14 Oct 03 17:41
Can't just recall, but my townie (4x4, auto) did somewhere between 17-19 seconds when I had the intercooler installed and the pump set up to suit...
- (#11190) david miller, 15 Oct 03 2:48
Ha ha ha boys in blue scratching their heads? More like laughing themselves silly! Ok, I'll give it a go when next out in the sticks. If my internal organs suffer from the G-forces then be it on your conscience Chris (LOL)
- (#11191) Ian Dunse, 15 Oct 03 3:12
Not bad David... you clearly have the record there! Now I know townies are quicker off the mark than my hiace. I will feel suitably humbled next time I draw alongside one at the lights.
Which engine would that be?
Await your test times with interest Ian. When you try it I think the 'burn baby burn' sticker goes lower offside front and rear bumper!!...
- (#11192) chris turner, 15 Oct 03 7:37
Well!!! if we're throuwing down gauntlets now, I had ours spinning the inside wheel in second gear on dry tarmac after pulling out of a right turn the other day, a miracle to spin in first, let alone second. 2CT Auto 4WD. In the wet she's a right laugh, people don't know what to do when they see 1.6 tons of bus coming towards them on a roundabout on full left lock & the back end out (no kids in car of course!)
Regards Rob.
- (#11193) Rob Drinkwater, 15 Oct 03 16:29
Tut, tut, tut, Rob.
I have never got mine sideways on anything (No ice here in Perth), but I have had the inside wheel spinning once or twice.
David, is there more info on your intercooler somewhere? It sounds interesting. Is it water or air-air?
And I thought I saw an official time of around 35secs for the 0-100kph. Don't know what mine does yet, but I'll test it tonight! (if I remember)
Dave.
- (#11194) DaveW, 16 Oct 03 1:08
Rob, yes they are rather tail- happy, aren't they! I've tried the same tricks in the Suzuki and a. it pulls hard enough to give you whiplash, and b. the bugger just won't let go!
DaveW, there's some pictures floating around somewhere, Rob has the kit now. But in a nutshell, it's a top- mounted 'cooler out of a Peugeot 405TD, mounted under the floor under the l/h side door. Inlet manifold is modded to point flow and return hoses down in the vicinity of the fuel filter, and a pair of 175mm high flow computer fans ensure there's cool air through it...
- (#11195) david miller, 16 Oct 03 2:12
23.7 seconds. That's the mean time over a few attempts. 4WD 2.0TD Auto. Of course that's as accurate as I could get without having a proper timer and speedo.
That's a gallon of diesel and new timing belt you owe me Chris ;-)
- (#11196) Ian Dunse, 16 Oct 03 4:43
Ian, I'll be looking to spot your bus on the next episode of 'Police, Camera , Action' (is that what its called?).
Should we meet at an Ace Jam I'll race you round the car park for the gallon and belt!!
- (#11197) chris turner, 16 Oct 03 6:59
Yes Chris, that'll be fun. A little scary but fun ...
- (#11198) Ian Dunse, 16 Oct 03 11:22
if you think an ace is slow you haven't driven the 3.0 turbo, i haven't even had chance to drive mine properly and know it will be quick off the mark.
but as someone said i bought it for the comfort not speed else i'd have bought a petrol carrier.
i want reliablilty economy and some fun, in that order please and if i really wanted speed i'd have bought a merc sprinter 2.9turbo the 5 cylinder one, now they are nippy and fast too judging by the fact no matter how fast you go there is always one in the mirror waiting to go past..........
- (#11242) Master Simon, 18 Oct 03 16:23
Funny that, isn't it. White van man has an all new weapon now. Forget the smokey old Transit thrashed up to 75, with Vito or Sprinter he can tailgate at the ton!
- (#11243) david miller, 18 Oct 03 16:40
Your'e not kidding - I was following the VW equivalent at a steady 104mph for around 20 motorway miles earlier in the year (not in the hiace I might add)
Think it was the lwb at that!
- (#11244) chris turner, 18 Oct 03 17:56
20.8 seconds. 2 litre, 2wd, overdrive off. Nobody could get past me - due to the smoke screen.
Does anybody know how to increase the turbo boost?
Does Nitrous oxide work in diesels?
Next time I'll try it with the wing mirrors folded in for less drag!
- (#11543) Mark Wolff, 5 Nov 03 21:22
Yes it does.
And there are several ways to increase turbo boost - but I'm not sure of how to do any of them!
A new exhaust (2.5inch diam) should be the first power up mod anyone does to these.
Dave.
- (#11544) DaveW, 5 Nov 03 22:28
NO point increasing the boost beyond about 11psi unless you fit an intercooler (BTDT...) Spec is something like 9- 11 psi. If a boost gauge tells you you're low an easy way to get it up a bit is to shim the wastegate actuator away from the compressor housing a little (like a couple of washers under each mounting). There's more detail on a Supra site somewhere. Basically, you're increasing the preload on the wastegate spring...
- (#11545) david miller, 6 Nov 03 12:05
Well guys, 3 runs and all under 18 seconds, using a passenger as timesman with a stop watch.
2WD auto, running on recycled chip shop fat, and a James Bond smoke screen
- (#11546) Clive (Bristol), 6 Nov 03 12:46
Suprised to see this at the top of the tree again.
Could this be the beginings of the 'ace answers racing division'!!
- (#11547) chris turner, 6 Nov 03 19:48
Whats NOT in the tank seems to help the old hiace. 21.5 secs, (1.5 sec quicker than normal),tank nearly empty and ambient temp of below freezing.
Seem to recall something about ambient humidity making quite a difference to how a deisel engine runs - think it was higher humidity = smoother running. Anyone know anything about this?
