(Home) Iffy brakes

Please can anyone out there let me know if your brake pedal gradually sinks . we have adjusted the front to rear compensator a bit and it has brought the pedal up a bit but it does still seem to sink a bit especially under servo power .I have been in contact with an experienced townie mechanic who recons that it is a common problem and replacing the master cyl seals may not improve it
Would appreciate any input from anyone with similar problems

How old is the vehicle - and its brake fluid? Replacing all the brake fluid with new may help.
Any sign of leakage from any of the wheel cylinders or master cylinder?
A friendly Mot station should put it on their brake tester for a nominal (if any) fee. This would tell you if the wheel brakes are faulty or not
Rebuilding/restoring a master cylinder 'should' restore a firm touch on an older vehicle if the above does not help
