(Home) Jam 2003 Nov 1 New Forest

At the spring ace jam, it was suggested to me that we could organise a day jam in the new forest.
We could meet up in one of the many car parks for a picnic, or move on to a pub for lunch perhaps ?
Hands up anyone who is interested.

Sounds a good idea to me, but then I was part of the original discussion.
Give me enough notice (4 weeks) and I'll be there.

- (#11085) Clive, 10 Oct 03 7:58

Possibly. A bit far for a one dayer but we'll see. Your back not recovered from sleeping on the Townace seats to try it again then Dave :-)

- (#11086) Ian Dunse, 10 Oct 03 8:13

I've been thinking just the same myself, Dave. How about Sat 1st Nov - end of half term week here. I presume we'd be welcome anyone who has, had, or hopes to have, a Toyota with "ace" in the name (including Spacecruisers), with Estima owners welcome if they're interested?

- (#11087) Dave Mason (Sussex), 10 Oct 03 10:29

Thanks for reminding me Ian, I’d all but forgotten how uncomfortable it was. The reason for a day jam was more because at this time of year it will be cold windy and rainy. Now that sounds kind of familiar! But if you are serious about a camp out then what the heck, I’m up for it.
1st of November sounds good to me Dave, and anything with ace in the name, or anyone who aspires to have something with ace in it, even Estima (ase is close enough) just need to find a good spot now.

No can do that weekend. Will be on my annual sojourn to Cornwall - sorry. But please don't rearrange on my account, I couldn't guarantee attendance anyway.

Don’t worry Ian, I’m also trying to organise a weekend in Bridport next year. A friend runs a pub that never shuts, and it has a field that we can camp in. He also has a few static vans he might let us have for a bargain price. They aren’t shiny new ones mind. I am looking at organising some entertainment and a barbeque for the Saturday evening as well.
Keep you informed

Bridport ? I'll have to get my map out to find that ??
But a pub with a feild !! sounds a good idear..

Paul.

- (#11091) Paul, 11 Oct 03 14:50

Hi Paul.
Sorry for the delay, I have been unable to log on to the BOK properly all weekend. Found a Trojan that seems to have blocked my most used favourite site. Anyway Bridport is on the south coast in Dorset about half way between Bournemouth and Exeter.

Day jam
Saturday the first of November
There is a car park at the Boldrewood deer sanctuary, and its not too far from the main A31, and it has toilets, so we could meet there at arround ten O‘clock. Any locals interested?

- (#11092) dave Bright, 13 Oct 03 3:13

I'll be there, may have the family with me.
Hope to see lots of shiney Aces!

Hi Dave,Andy Richards here.
Well excited about possible ace jam in bridport next year. Count me in, it's where I live, so can get there very easy. Work on spacecruiser now finished!
And she's looking good!. I know a few people with spacecruisers who may be interested so will get in contact with them as soon as possible.
When will you be letting everybody know the date and cost?
When you do let me know.
Cheers
Andy Richards
Very excited Spacecruiser/Townace fan.

New Forest Day Jam on Saturday the 1st November 2003

Directions:-
From Christchurch
Take the A35 towards Lyndhurst.
From the Sainsbury’s roundabout travel towards Lyndhurst for 15.4 Kilometres where there is a cross roads signposted Boldrewood to the left, and Rhinefield to the right.
Turn Left to Boldrewood. This is the Boldrewood Arboretum Ornamental Drive. It’s a narrow lane, and its two way so be prepared to give way, or go off road.

From the M27
Leave the M27 at junction 1 Cadnam, and follow the A337 to Lyndhurst.
From Lyndhurst, follow signs for the A35 towards Christchurch.
After 3.5 to 4 Kilometres there is a cross roads signposted Boldrewood to the right, and Rhinefield to the left.
Turn Right to Boldrewood. This is the Boldrewood Arboretum Ornamental Drive. It’s a narrow lane, and its two way so be prepared to give way, or go off road.

Once on the Boldrewood Arboretum Ornamental Drive there are four cattle grids. The deer sanctuary car park is on the right immediately after the fourth grid which is 3.8 Kilometres from the A35.

The car park has an ice cream van, so long as its not raining the chap said.
Nestling in the wooded area there is a toilet block, and a caravan with information on the local fungi, and some antlers, and sculls. Just across the road is a viewing platform for the Deer. November is the rutting season so if your lucky to see the Deer, you may be doubly lucky to see…..

The nearest pub is quite some distance, even by car so I would advise everybody to bring a picnic. I am going to ask my father in law to come along with his campervan, so that hot drinks are available throughout the day for those that would like them.

Dave Mason has suggested a walk in the forest, so we could go for a stroll about 12 ish, to build up an appetite for the picnic. The leaves are just beginning to turn, so in two weeks time, the Forest could be looking spectacular.

If anyone would like my mobile phone number incase of getting lost, then send me an email, and I will email it back to you. See you there

I've just seen the pop up ad for the forest day jam on Ace Answers, thank you Dave I‘m impressed.
So far there are 3 definites including myself, one possible from the IOW, but no locals, which is a surprise as I see at least one Townie every time I go out.

I’m really looking forward to meeting some cyber friends from the BOK again, and collecting my copy of a CD with an English manual on it. I plan to take my Russian manual as well, if any one wants a glance.

I cant confirm the campervan yet as my father in law is touring Europe, and isn’t back till the weekend, so I will have to confirm this later.
Regards for now

- (#11317) dave Bright, 23 Oct 03 11:21

Its only a couple of days to go now, and I can confirm that the campervan will be there to provide hot drinks throughout the day.

The BBC 5 day forecast for Southampton is showing it to be dry with sunny spells. My father in law, who works at Minstead in the forest, not far from the Deer sanctuary, says the forest is looking beautiful now as the colours are reaching there best, so we should be in for a memorable day.

We just got back from the New Forest day jam and in all, seven aces turned up.

The drive up to the Deer sanctuary was beautiful, and there were a lot of professional photographers mooching around setting up the perfect shot. Quite what they made of me, leaping out of my Ace every 20 yards or so to snap a shot or two, I don’t know, but I did get some very odd looks. Then Dave Mason trundled up behind me, so I followed him up to the car park, only stopping twice more, but I have at last got some nice pictures of my Ace.

It was sunny for most of the day, and not too cold for November either, but I think the campervan dispensing hot drinks and hot dogs, helped to tolerate the colder moments.

Thanks too those who attended, especially those from as far away as Worthing, Bristol and Winchester. If I had been giving prizes, there was one that would have deserved the first place for three reasons. Firstly patience, for waiting 3 months for their local Toyota dealer to fix an overheating problem, secondly for the distance they had travelled to get there, and lastly for their courage for travelling from Essex on a test drive to check the cooling system. Well done Steve and Jean.

The weather was lovely so we decided to get the kids out and meet some other townace owners . Like dave ,we too made several photo stops on the way up to the car park , the forrest looks fantastic at this time of year. Thanks to dave bright for arranging it (and the cuppa), clive for the cd and dave mason for this superb web site which is an invaluable source of info for us all.Sorry we couldnt spend more time chatting but had to try and keep track of the we ones.It was nice to meet people face to face and put faces to names.

- (#11495) Chris Goldup, 1 Nov 03 16:00

Great day, thanks Dave for arranging it, thanks to Mrs Dave (I am hopeless with names!), and Mrs Dave mum and dad.
Names and faces, I'm more a face and aces sorry if I forget your name.
Interest raised over several Jams next year, watch this space.
Got my Russian manual, now I just need to take those basic russian lessons....
Sadly the trip home was a bad event for me, someone had put the idea of stopping for meal into the wife's head and so it came to pass that I had to pay...
Oh sorry the Townace was fine on the way home!

- (#11496) Clive (Bristol), 2 Nov 03 1:47

Hi Clive,
Mrs dave is called Tracey, and her mum and dad are called Janet and Terry. If you had told me you were still hungry, I would have given you a doggy bag to take with you. Then again cheapness isn’t always the best option, especially when your nearest and dearest is concerned. I’m sure the investment in a hot meal will pay dividends one day.

- (#11497) dave Bright, 2 Nov 03 3:47

Dave,
Tracey gave us a doggy bag but it was not me that was hungry! Managed to get home without that nagging pain in my left ear, why oh why do I have to be going deaf in my right ear? Can't remember what time we left but got home at 20 to nine.
Decided that the Russian manual is a lot different to the one that Mark has, going to check out the wiring diagrams against the Toyota Van ones sometime.
My kids liked the idea of their mother talking till the cows came home. Free ranging livestock ambled past the car park for those of you not there. Anyone see the hind leg fall off of the donkey?

- (#11498) Clive Bristol, 2 Nov 03 8:21

I'm going to try to post a picture from the forest, if it fails, could someone tell me how to do it?
Regards
dave

- (#11499) dave Bright, 2 Nov 03 10:54

As well as congratulating DaveB on choosing an excellent location and providing good hospitality, this seems like a good place to comment on posting pictures on the "BoK" - (Mark's website, not mine).
As I understand it you can only use "Optional Image URL" if you have got a picture that is already ftp-uploaded on to the web somewhere. Dave's posting above refers to the "C:" drive in his PC to which no-one else has access. So unless you already publish on the web don't try to post pictures here.
Don't use "Optional Link URL" and "Link Title" either! There seems to be a fault which means the link disappears forever as soon as another posting is made to the same thread. To refer to another website just paste its address into the message text - clumsy but it works.

- (#11500) Dave Mason (Sussex), 3 Nov 03 7:02

Unfortunately we were too optimistic! The head gasket blew and we had to be towed home from the M25.Any helpful suggestions welcome,is this likely to be connected to our overheating problem we thought had been solved?

- (#11523) Steve, 3 Nov 03 13:22

Hi Steve and Jean.
I was mortified when your post appeared, and I'm so sorry to here that you have had yet more overheating problems. My heart goes out to you.

Something obviously gave out, but having got all the way to the Forest and half way back, it would suggest that there was possibly some fault lurking in the background, that was previously undiagnosed. Can you explain what happened on the M25?

- (#11524) dave Bright, 4 Nov 03 6:22

Hi Dave,
Temp gauge dropped to cold I thought this meant that the thermostat had become disconnected but within minutes we had total power loss and rolled to a standstill. On opening the engine cover the expansion tank was doing a passable impression of a boiling kettle and water and oil were leaking. Any advice would be most welcome.

- (#11585) steve, 8 Nov 03 4:56

Hi Steve.
If the temperature dropped to cold, its most likely to have been a sudden loss of a significant amount of coolant. The sensor can only sense the temperature properly whilst immersed in coolant.
If you then lost all power, and there was water and oil everywhere, then it sounds bad, really bad I’m afraid, you may need to find a new engine, sorry.
