(Home) Engine cooling sensors

Hi Everyone, I've been following this site avidly since purchasing my Liteace. It's a 1992 FXV 2litre
TD 4WD auto. All has been well until I started with the dreaded cooling problems in France earlier this year. At the time I thought it was the viscous fan coupling. To get us home I locked the fan up and all was well, if a little noisy. Once home I set about fitting an electric unit and found that one from a Rover 820 was the right physical size and seemed man enough for the job, cutting in at 92 degrees (sensed in the top hose). All now seemed to be well again until recently, climbing up a prolonged steep hill there was the ominous sound of water boiling off. We were overheating again, even though the electric fan was on and the temperature guage was resolutely stuck at it's "normal" position ie just off centre on the cool side of 12 o'clock. I've now found a small leak on the main radiator and this is currently away for rectification. I will also find out whether there is any blockage there as well. I've checked the stat and that is operating as it should, opening at 82 degrees. Whilst everything is in pieces I thought it would be worthwhile checking the sensors and their operation. So far I have failed to locate the temperature guage sensor (where is this exactly?)but I have found two sensors on the head top hose exit. One has a single lucar connector on the top and is stamped 103 on one of the flats. This is open when cold and I think it closes at 103 degrees to bring in the horizontal electric fans. The other has a shrouded single pin connector and no apparent markings. It is closed at cold and all temps up to boiling. What does this one do?
I have noticed that there is room on the casting to machine a hole for a third sensor and was thinking of putting a second temperature guage sensor in this position possibly wired to a seperate guage or maybe to the original. Has anyone any comments or advice on this?

the second sensor is to disable the a/c, it goes open circuit at ? 115c IIRC

The gauge sender is on the head under the inlet manifold, between no.s 3 and 4...

The outlet isn't such a good for a gauge sender as there isn't much flow there when the engine is cool, and it'll read higher than the actual head temp the rest of the time.

Best go with one of Dave Mason's modifications.
