My father has just bought a 91' 4x4 townace (paid £5000). He is now selling his 90' townace and we are arguing about its value.
My father thinks it is rare to have a townace a 2wd, manual townace in white. Is he correct ?
Basically its a white townace super extra. It has e/w, moonroof, e/curtains and ice/hotbox. It has covered 140000km (88000 miles).
When compared to the new townace the older townace has a lot more extras, but it is the older shape. It is also faster, but that is another question (which I think is related to the 4wd. extra weight, gear ratios etc.).
We parked it at the end of our drive over the weekend and there was a lot of interest, but when my father told them the price (£3500) people thought it was kind of expensive. I tend to agree, but I know nothing about townaces.
I can find dealer prices and advertised prices on the internet, but what is the average price people would be willing to pay ?
Thanks

Selling off the drive, as you have found out is problematic. Passers by will be attracted by its look, amazed at the toys, and stunned stupid at the price for what they will only see as a 13 year old vehicle.
To get some idea of prices, visit Ace Answers at http://mpvi.net/index.html and click on the for sale button. You might consider placing an advert there yourself perhaps? If not your best bet is an ad in all the usual places where people wanting an Ace will look. People in the Know are looking for good Aces, and wont necessarily expect to pay the sort of prices usually associated with 13 year old cars.
Hope that helps

Nick. As well as the good advice given by the above postings, a look at the Autotrader website will show a number of Townaces for sale and you will get an idea of current prices.

We bought a direct import TD Townace in automn 2000 for £4900. It had 33ooo miles or 50000 Km on the clock and we also liked all the little extras like AC, EW, moonroof, icebox etc.
We really looked after it , regular services. NEw exhaust, diesel injectors adjustments, tyres, cambelt,no rust. IT is a lovely but slow car -it took us 3 days with the children to reach Bordeaux from Essex .
Now she stopped childminding she doesn't need the 8 seater anymore. It has now covered 50000miles and we found us in a similar situation . The only caller to my Loot adverd cut me down to £2300 but kept repeating the mantra '14 year old car'
I probably could sell it for £1700 - perhaps even that is optimistic.I've seen the prices on the Loot webpage and was shocked. Can't believe they are in as good a nick as ours.
Knowing the good shape the car is in and the service it has received I would buy it for £1700.
Or is this all a matter of oversupply in the second hand market.
I'm trying to get an opinion what to do.
Any comments wellcome

Klaus. The secondhand car market is on the floor and is not likely to recover in the forseeable future. Advertising an "ordinary" car for sale, sometimes, results in nil enquiries and, even if someone does ring, it seems that they have many others to look at.
At the present time it is definitely a buyers market.
With the unique Townace, I think it has to be "sold" on it's specification because, for the money, there is nothing that comes near it and, comparisons have to be made with, say, a Renault Espace, with twice the mileage, half the "goodies" and, usually, twice the price and, in many cases, not too far removed on age.
It's easy for me to comment I know, but I think a prospective purchaser has to be made aware of how different and high spec these vehicle are.

Thanks for the info.
I think John was correct about the Espace. An espace driver was interested in buying the townace, as it was much larger than his espace and his wife liked all the gadgets. He is 75% sure he will buy, fingers crossed. If this sale doesn't happen it looks like my father will have to drop his price considerably to compete with some of the other townaces that are for sale.
It also looks like he overpaid for his J reg. I don't think I will mention this to him.
