(Home) Any good for towing

At present i have a 1994 300 tdi discovery. But i have always fancied a townace for towing my caravan about. Any opinions appreciated.
Should i stick with my disco, or change to a townie?

Check the archives for much discussion.

I have known someone who towed with a tdi Disco, and he raved about it.
On the other hand many people speak dispairingly of the Ace when towing.

I have never towed with mine, but on what I read and hear, stick to your Disco if you want to tow.

Hi Lenny
I don't want to put you off because the Townace is a good fun vehicle with lots of whistles and bells. Unfortunately its not blessed with an abundance of power, so towing is a bit of a struggle especially on hills. Mike at the spring ace jam arrived towing a 24 foot twin axle caravan, but did confess to being overtaken by some cyclists on the steeper hills he had encountered. Then there is the extra strain on a cooling system that is not renowned for having lots of spare capacity at the best of times.
A lot depends on the weight of your caravan. If you do a lot of towing, and are hell bent on something from the Toyota ace range, I suspect your best option would be a 3Litre Hiace super custom or something. Bad MPG, but a bit more power, and you still get all the toys.
