(Home) Top cooling hose sucked flat & tyre size

Hi every one,
I have a 1990 2.4 td 2L.te engine 2 w/d hiace.
the problem is the top rad hose gets sucked flat when engine cools down, I have got a new rad cap from toyota the one with the plastic bit in the middle and the top hose is in good condition.
can any one tell me the standard tyre size for the hiace, it is fitted with 205/70/14 but the british van are fit with 185/70/14 can i fit these

Hi Dave.
I have 205/70 R14 on my Townie whilst the door jam says 195/70 R14. The extra width on the road seems to cause a bit more of a bulge in the side wall, and that seems to absorb a bit more of the impact of cats eye’s and pot holes in the road.

If the top hose is collapsing, its because its walls have become weak. It may look good, but the reinforced walls wont stand the pressure. If its collapsing on cool down, it’s a racing certainty that it will collapse when the thermostat opens as well, so your best bet is to get it changed quick, before you start getting overheating problems.

It may be worth checking your expansion bottle is clean inside - crud may be being sucked up and temporarirly blocking the valve in the rad cap if not blocking a tube before etc. -
Also check that the pick up tube and the one to rad cap are not collapsing causing the top hose to collapse - also ensure the pick up tube isn't managing to suck onto something in the tank.
If all OK you could maybe make up some temporary external reinforcing to stop the collapse (principal as per external pipe benders) until you manage to replace it
My Jreg hiace supercustom 4wd door pillar says either 195 SR15 or 205/70 R15/95Q - Guess it depends what wheels are fitted but I would go for the 205 If you are doing the full set
