(Home) Faulty fuel gauge

I have just bought a 1991 Townace Super Extra and the fuel gauge is not working. The needle seems to be stuck on full all the time. Can anyone tell me the sequence to check for faults, in the tank sender, connections and gauge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

gauge full= sender short to earth. Disconnect the sender and see if it goes down. If it does, duff sender. If it doesn't, cable or gauge fault...

just have a look at the fuel tank bottom, if its dented then it makes the float stick due to the way the baffles inside the tank are configured, they foul the float arc - how do i know this? - my chum bought a damaged repairable from a scrapyard , it had been moved with a forklift, denting the tank bottom in, we had the tank on and off a few times before getting it to work.
