(Home) Spacecruiser petrol tank (Sp+)

I have a 1988 Spacecruiser (petrol)every time i have to fill it up (very often!) it is a nightmare getting the petrol cap off. Once released there is a woosh of air being sucked into the tank. Is there meant to be a breather or something, and if so would this cause it to be a so and so to start if it has not ran for a few days?

Any advice would be greatfuly received.

There is a tangle of breather pipes, any one of which may have collapsed or got pinched and restricting air flow, this in turn may cause a vacuum to restrict the fuel feed. Also check the fuel filter for free flow.
A diagram of the pipes can be found on the US Toyota Van site www.toyotavans.org.
The filler cap always has a suction gasp when being removed.
