(Home) Blocked radiator/overheating

Whilst talking to BBSC spares re my overheating, they suggested that my rad may be blocked. A local mechanic confirmed this and told me to back flush my system by removing the bottom hose and shoving a hose pipe down, i also removed the plastic drain plug and hosed this area. I think this may have done the job as the rad seems to be consistently warms throughout. I now have to drain the system and add the coolant mix, it is a G reg 2.0 td 1989, does anybody know the capacity of the system as i believe i have to mix to a 50/50 ratio as it is getting colder. Please also comment on the back flush procedure to let me know if this is correct.

Hello again David.
The problem with back flushing is that its impossible to see in to the radiators to check that they have been cleared enough, but from your description it sounds like it should be ok.
For coolant mixing or diluting, checkout the online hand book at http://mpvi.net/ih/indexhan.htm
There is a lot of useful information there. Dave Mason was kind enough to publish some articles I supplied him with relating to the cooling system, particularly mixing coolant, and deciding on what mix to use. The capacity is somewhere between 7.5 to 10 litres, depending on whether you have front and rear heating, and cool/hot box.
Hope that helps
